NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11078 comments I hate to give 2 stars to a classic author, but "It's OK" is the best I can say about the second Sherlock Holmes Story. The investigation was boring, but the murderer's side of the story was a little more interesting. Oh and there is a sweet little romance for Doctor Watson. From now on I'm just going to read the most highly rated Sherlock Holmes stories. This one ends with Sherlock shooting up cocaine in an arm that is already full of needle tracks. I wonder how this was received at the time.

"As with the first story, A Study in Scarlet, produced two years previously, The Sign of the Four was not particularly successful to start with. It was the short stories, published from 1891 onwards in Strand Magazine, that made household names of Sherlock Holmes and his creator."

I felt the same as you. Kinda boring.

I think I have them all on Audible. At least 60 hours of books and stories, for just one credit. It was an amazing deal, unless of course I don't like them.

I'm wondering how people reacted to the drug use in the story. If it was a movie, it would have been censored from the mid 30's to the late 60's.

That is a great deal.

Simon Vance reading Sherlock Holmes stories are my favorite bedtime story pick! I know all of these stories very well, but I'm just like a kid who asks for the same book a thousand times. And Simon is always willing to indulge me. It's very useful for turning my brain off. I let Sherlock solve all the puzzles of the universe.

( But Sign of Four is one of my least favorites. I think Conan Doyle was at his best with the early short stories. )

Thanks that's good to know. It's nice to have these stories handy when I need a change of pace.
