Charles Lockhart In her article "You Still Can't Go Home Again", Sara Blackburn of the New York Times writes how one can say "Sula" is an allegory of sorts. It is often said that people become "paralyzed" when they realize the cruelties and hardships African Americans faced even when they were apparently freed in the past. I believe Sara is completely correct and would say that “Sula” is a great example of an allegory. Though, by focusing on the hardships that the characters in the novel faced solely due to the color of skin, we can fail to notice other important themes such as how Sula’s return to the community actually unites them and her disruptive actions lead to positive outcomes in the long run.
