Hello there! (Yes..i'm still watching star wars movies!) I like to savour them, awright! "These are not the droids you are looking for!" :-D

Righty ho then..now then....this one has got me stumped for a nom...bar one that Tech mentioned when some of us were asking for clarification on his nom, back in June. But here is it...sounds interesting:

'Discomfort Zone. - for good or ill, a record in which the act crosses genres with, let's say, positive results.'

And just in case you're not too sure what this theme is asking for..here's Tech's explanation, as was posted on the nominations thread on June 20th:

Think of an act recording a song (their own or a cover) that lies outside their comfort zone, and is a departure from their usual output and style. this should be respectful of the genre tackled - a jolly good bash!
a good example might be elvis costello does country with 'good year for the roses'
and if this round is a howling success (not bloody likely) the theme could be reversed to highlight bad examples of this.
think led zeppelin's puerile take on reggae, 'D’yer Mak’er'.

Are we clear then? Right then, let's have your oddball noms and links as per usual thank you.

See ya on Wednesday then...ciao.

was going to go with burning spear's 'rock and roll', but despite the heavy riffs being laid down, it's still a reggae tune. so keit' does disco it is. from his 'big label' album 'too expensive', on which he blew fame out of the water by releasing a bewildering collection of genre crossing tunes (and, yes, a reggae song) in an attempt to alienate (or please) everyone. if that wun't enough, he thought the public would probably get off on seeing the outline of his boaby on the back cover (see clip)!

Val H. | 22162 comments I apologise for going the route of standards - after all, hasn't everyone done an album of standards? But I feel that while we may regard an artist as moving outside their comfort zone, in reality all they're doing is falling back on their own influences. So if Bob wants to do Sinatra and Sir Ken does opera and Queen Latifah does soul, they're really doing a genre they feel comfortable about; it's us who look up startled.

When released as a single, it was indeed credited to Keith Emerson alone. Works Vol. 2 is a strange album in that 3 sides of the four are in effect solo sides (a bit like Ummagumma, perhaps) whilst the fourth is a band side. From memory, Keith's 'side' is taken up with his piano concerto.

That was the first Works album, Tim. Works vol 2 was a single disc and much more of a rag-bag. A few tracks were clearly solo recordings, e.g. Greg Lake's Watching Over You and Carl Palmer's Bullfrog. The band playing on the latter was actually Back Door rather than ELP.

There are a surprising number of covers, one even by Eek-a-Mouse but Sheryl Crow's live version starts with a fairly comical pronunciation omitting the crucial apostrophe - effectively Dire Maker which misses the point entirely that the title is a play on Jamaica.

Anyway..i couldn't find much so....i'm turning to a fellow countryman with this track. I got back to Shrewsbury early yesterday evening (one of my trains had actually run on time), while the shops were still open. I went into a shop that trades in second-hand phones, tablets, cameras, games consoles, games and DVDs, run by a pair of studded hipsters (i.e. two blokes with silly beards and excessive piercings, rather than an item of sixties legwear). As I scanned the small display of cameras, I suddenly noticed the background music. These dopey pillocks cool dudes were playing ELP's Tarkus: probably the worst album made by any band anywhere in the world ever. I decided I wasn't interested in cameras anyway and promptly took my leave.

Impossible. The same band made 'Love Beach', which is far far worse. Side 2 of Tarkus is mixed quality, but the title suite is great.
