I'm borrowing this idea from another goodreads group I'm in but with the year coming towards its end what are the books that have stood out for you not written this year but read by you.

So many good books its hard to narrow it down but a few that stood out for me
Prince of Foolsby Mark Lawrence
The Martianby Andrew Weir
Dreams and Shadows by C. Robert Cargill
The Emperor's Bladesby Brian Staveley
Traitor's Bladeby Sebastian De Castell
Old Man's Warby John Scalzi
Steelheartand The Emperor's Soulby Brandon Sanderson
and The Beauty of Murderby AK Benedict

Tom | 216 comments I've read a few good books this year
Gardens of the Moon
Red Seas Under Red Skies
Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set

Brandon Sanderson is probably my favourite author at the moment and I love the mistborn series but the book that I think I enjoyed most was a bit of a surprise for me
Super Powereds: Year 1
Super Powereds: Year 2

I'd never heard of them or the author Drew Hayes before these but I was hooked from the first few pages

This will be a blog post of mine towards the end of the year so I guess it will be good to think them up now, as it'll take a while...

I'll get back to you on this one :P

I have read sooo many books this year (100+) so I may need to revise this but here is my first stab at my favorites.

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
The Martian by Andy Weir
Heir of Novron by Michael Sullivan
Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

I think the books that have stood out for me this year are:
The Martian
Promise of Blood
Fortune's Pawn
A Scanner Darkly

Not bad for a girl who refused to read sci-fi before joining the group. Thanks for all the recommendations guys!

I loved the Martian and A Scanner Darkly. I'll have to try the other two .

I have copies of both so I will get to them

message 8: by Nara (new)

Nara (greengp01) Gahh it's always so hard for me to narrow down these "top reads" lists because I read so much (close to 300 books this year). 2014 was the year I discovered Brandon Sanderson, and I think pretty much all of his books except Elantris fall into my Favourites. Anyway, here's a list:

Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set
The Alloy of Law
Steelheart
Heir of Fire
The Way of Kings
Words of Radiance
Dreams of Gods & Monsters
The Name of the Wind
The Rithmatist
Traitor's Blade
Legion and The Emperor's Soul
The Blood of Olympus
The Crimson Campaign

Okay, so it's ridiculously long. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO NARROW IT DOWN THOUGH TOO MANY GOOD BOOKS
haha it's like 50% Brandon Sanderson

message 9: by Tom (new)

Tom | 216 comments wow 300 books when do you find time to sleep. thought I was doing well with about 80

When you've been in the group a little while, you will learn to not be surprised by Nara's reading antics - and only be surprised if she doesn't read at least a book a day :P

I have to agree that The Emperor's Blades was definitely one of the best reads of the year.

I really enjoyed Emperors Blades and will be starting an ARC of the sequel soon and really looking forward to it

*adds to shelf* Sounds good :D

I'm trying to avoid ARCs now, I have too many unread...

Its the only one I've there to read at the moment thankfully. Too much pressure otherwise.

message 15: by Nara (new)

Nara (greengp01) haha indeed I am the resident mutant- probs read a book every day or two :) I do mostly read YA though, and they're usually a fair bit shorter than the average adult SFF novel.

I've really been wanting to get around to The Emperor's Blades, but there are just so many good books on the TBR... plus I'm kind of in the middle of my exam period and should probs stop procrastinating by reading lol

I have still some promising books on my tbr for the next couple of weeks that I saved up to be end of the year read (Words of Radiance, The Fell Sword or The Iron Jackal), so this list might get longer.

So far, I have 3 books this year that made it onto my favorite shelf, where only 10-20% of my 5 star reads end up on. These were:

City of Stairs
The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack
Blood Song

Apart from that I had a few other 5 star reads, like:

The Garden of Stones
The Three-Body Problem
Ninja Versus Pirate Featuring Zombies
The Black Lung Captain
Willful Child
Space Captain Smith
Faith
The Six-Gun Tarot

You weren't kidding Nara when you said you discovered Brandon Sanderson this year :)

He is by far my favorite author right now.

Joey (mostlyjoe) | 178 comments Hmmm. Not much which I plan on fixing this year however:

Words of Radiance By Brandon Sanderson
