The one thing missing in both the book and movie is the coffee.
They got the cigarettes but no coffee. (There should be at least one Night Hawks at the Diner kind of scene). And the directors cut had it right- no sappy endings.
Rachel and Roy should have run off together. Rick should have marched off to join the foreign legion.
(I might have gotten that last part mixed up a bit.)

That's what makes it a dystopia. No coffee.

Coffee is a plant. I suppose they could have synthetic coffee, but given the environmental context, I'd say if you aren't offworld, you're not getting any coffee.

That would be reason enough to move!

I think most people stuck on Earth are there for genetic or financial reasons. They can't move, most of them. They see the enticing offers and can't do anything about it.

Personally, I don't care for coffee and it wouldn't affect my choices.

& explain the attraction of the off world colonies-
A planet without coffee wouldn't be fit or live on.

I think you can only move if you're rich, or if you have contributed something to society, or your genes are good enough, or something. A lot of folks have gone already which is why there are so many empty houses. Many of the remainder would love to move, but aren't considered desirable enough to do so.

I could survive if coffee disappeared... I could possibly survive without the bear or whiskey as well...

But if the wine went TOO?? I'm a dead man.
