Discuss Chapter 1 - Chapter 7

NOTE: While this section is meant to focus on the specified chapters of this book, this read is meant for people who have already read the entire series.

As a result, unlike most of our group reads, full spoilers for the series will be allowed without spoiler tags in every discussion post.

If you haven't read some/all of the books (What's wrong with you?) proceed at your own peril.

I ended up starting a few days early. Doubt it matters as Dara finished it like a week ago, and I'm not sure if anyone else is still participating at this point.

Random thoughts from this section:

Who told Snape about the real date for Harry’s leaving? I forget and I’m too impatient to wait. I suppose I can just look it up. Fluer suspect Hagrid, and apparently so does Harry given his past actions of leaking information (almost constantly in the series, especially to the three of them).

Happy Birthday Harry! Here, have a book about how to seduce my sister! Though I’m sure Ron figures (hopes?) that Harry will move on to other women instead? But really though..what a terrible gift when they are leaving school and going to fight Voldemort. That couldn’t have waited unitl his 18th birthday? By then they’ll have either defeated Voldemort or be dead. Silly Ron.

terpkristin Didn't Dumbledore tell him, so he could be on the up and up with the Death Eaters?

I'm still reading CoS but am jumping in when I remember things. :P

You could be right but it seemed as though they changed the plan after Pious Thickness was put under the imperious curse.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Pretty sure it was Dumbledore ...although it wasn't really explained how Dumbledore knew. In Snape's memories we get one where he and Dumbledore's painting are talking about the plan to get Harry out of Privet Drive.

Snape suggests the plan change to Mundungus and then confounds him so he doesn't remember it was Snape who suggested the multiple Harry's.

Although how Snape was able to get into the Headmaster's room before being Headmaster and having just murdered Dumbledore is kinda weird.

Ah, OK.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments That Lupin scene always kind of pissed me off and was glad for Harry's reaction. Get it together Lupin, quit trying to run away.

And, yeah, the "plan" for getting in and out of the Ministry was so laughable. I love how at one point Harry even thinks how foolish they were. Fuckin Umbridge again, just eating up all that nonsense going on, so sickening.

terpkristin THAT was it. I knew Dumbledore was involved. So much for my standing up for what I remember. :D

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Oh yeah, and the wedding. Loved the wedding. So much good stuff going on.

- Harry starts on his road to not trusting Dumbledore after Aunt Muriel talks all that shit.

- Krum fighting with Lovegood over the Deathly Hallows mark

- Ending with Thicknese being killed, Ministry falling

And there's just something so cool thinking about a wizard's wedding. Lots of good visuals.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I'm still reading but I'm only about halfway through the last book - have been dealing with midterms, well and WoW and my reading time has cut back a lot.

Anxious to get to this one - I don't remember it well.

I havent started WoW yet. I got a week of free time and havent used it. I meant to do some of the pre expansion stuff, but havent. Maybe Tuesday, though I haven't played in over a year...

Suzanne | 1582 comments Its like riding a bike...a super addictive bike.

The pre-expansion stuff isn't huge - there's a series of quests that takes maybe 30 min and gives some nice rewards. But no turning people into zombies, or other previous-type activities.

And UBRS I thought..

terpkristin My poison of choice lately has been the Nintendo 3DS game "Fantasy Life." I think I'd drown in WoW

The game is far less addiciting without the right people to share it with IMHO.

And while I know it's my fault, lets end the wow talk and get back on topic please.

We can create a wow/gaming thread if people are interested.

Dara (cmdrdara) Ch. 1
-Mustache-twirly evil scene with all the henchmen/women around the table.

Ch. 2
-I enjoy learning about Dumbledore's past in this book. It humanizes him and show that he makes mistakes.

-Rita Skeeter, back at it.

-Harry sees Aberforth's eye in the glass.

Ch. 3
-I wish Harry and Dudley had a bit more reconcilliation. Maybe start in the previous book. I understand all the bad blood though and why it might not work.

Ch. 4
-I hate the Trace and the vague way magic is detected. It pulls me out of the story.

-Having seven different Harrys is clever.

-RIP Hedwig.

Ch. 5
-Not knowing where the others are makes this chapter so tense. And George coming back all bloody and missing an ear...

-RIP, Mad-Eye Moody. We hardly knew ye.

Ch. 6
-I understand Mrs. Weasley's worries. I wouldn't want Harry, Ron, and Hermione to leave.

-My heart breaks for Hermione here, having to modify her parents' memory to make them move to Australia and forget that Hermione exists...

Ch. 7
-Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches... of course Ron needed that...

-So Norbert is a girl... awesome!

-The Sword of Gryffindor may present itself to any worth Gryffindor. I wonder if this will be relevant later...

-Babbity Rabbity and the Cackling Stump... heh.

Dara (cmdrdara) I finished about a week ago (as Rob said). I don't know how Snape knew the exact date they were moving Harry (could very well be from Hagrid) but Dumbledore tells Snape that Snape has to tell the Death Eaters the exact date to avoid suspicion.

terpkristin The Hedwig death scene hit me harder than that of Moody or some of the other characters, even Lupin and Tonks.
