I enjoy reading books where one of the main characters is learning the ropes in a new situation. We have read as a group quite a few of these. For example:
Quarter Share (Golden Age of the Solar Clipper, #1) by Nathan Lowell Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell
Balance of Trade (Liaden Universe, #3) by Sharon Lee Balance of Trade by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

A couple that we haven’t read yet that I enjoy rereading:
Alliance of Equals (Liaden Universe, #19) by Sharon Lee Alliance of Equals by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
Take the Star Road (The Maxwell Saga, #1) by Peter Grant Take the Star Road by Peter Grant

What’s one of your favorites that fits this theme?

Trike | 777 comments The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet fits. Probably also The Warrior's Apprentice as Miles joins the mercenaries.

Sten is a series of this, as young Karl goes through various stages of life and aspects of society.

A lot of great suggestions here! We’ll do this theme in the next set of nominations.

And yes Sculpted Ship is a good read. Still waiting for the sequel though....
