Sophie | 216 comments I'm creating the November 2019 book discussions a little early because I'm going away for a few days. But a friendly reminder than you can revive any of the old threads if you're reading any book off the list and want to discuss it. Happy reading!

On the Road by Jack Kerouac is our group read from the 50 books list for November 2019. We previously read this book as a group in 2016: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Sophie | 216 comments After a little bit of research I went from not having heard of any of the three group reads for November 2019 to now wanting to read them all. I'm going to try this one first.

On the Road is one of the Guardian's 100 best novels: https://www.theguardian.com/books/201...
That article is where I learnt most of the info I now know about this book. Apparently the main draft (nearly 90,000 words) was written in three weeks in April 1951. How crazy. Also, as Buck noted in the previous discussion, this book is a fictionalised account of real events.

message 3: by Buck (new)

Buck (spectru) There are two versions of On The Road. An edited version used fictitious names. The book using the true names of the characters was, I believe, published later.

Sophie | 216 comments I'm about 90 pages into this book and mixed feelings so far. It's different, transportive which I love. I'm enjoying the glimpse into a life different from my own. The writing just keeps flowing, so interesting. My issues so far are getting all the characters and places straight in my head. Also the ways the woman are portrayed and talked about is making me quite uncomfortable.
