Unfortunately that doesn't work in the app, only the desktop version.

message 254: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 135 comments I am currently reading a big coffee table book about the band Queen and the sci-fi novel Navigators of Dune. Based on that Currently Reading shelf, Goodreads is recommending I read...

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

I am not really seeing the connection.

Wow, that's a bizarre one! Today I got a logical one, so no point in posting it.

Son of the Shadows

I have a recommendation for ….

Wait For It….

This!

both have... adventures?

message 261: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) | 413 comments LOL Aga.

I had a look at my recommendation of the day and found that my STEM shelf (as in books with characters into science, technology, engineering, maths) had inspired Goodreads to suggest I might enjoy The Windflower. Um? I copy the blurb here for your reading pleasure:
SHE LONGED FOR A PIRATE'S KISSES, FOR A GOLDEN ROGUE'S CARESS...

Every lady of breeding knows. No one has a good time on a pirate ship. No one, that is, but the pirates. Yet there she was, Merry Wilding - kidnapped in error, taken from a ship bound from New York to England, spirited away in a barrel and swept aboard the infamous Black Joke....There she was, trembling with pleasure in the arms of her achingly handsome, sensationally sensual, golden-haired captor - Devon. From the storm-tossed Atlantic to the languid waters of the Gulf Stream, from a smuggler's den to a gilded mansion, Merry struggled to escape...to escape the prison of her own reckless passions, the bondage of sweet, bold desire...

The cover is worth a look too.
The Windflower by Laura London

message 263: by Efreak (new)

Efreak (efreak2004) | 1 comments Not a personal recommendation, but probably related: I was looking at a Japanese light novel recently, an isekai (extremely cliche genre involving reincarnation into another world, often a video game or novel), and one of the "similar books" suggested was a nonfiction book about Auschwitz.

@CBRetriever I generally use the Goodreads mobile app, but even in the browser there is no _hover_ on mobile. Worse, all covers are extremely low quality in the app, most likely they're intended for viewing on a 4-6" phone, not a 10-12" tablet. Tapping a link that takes me away from the conversation, I can still return, however on return the scroll position is frequently lost, and must be found again by hand

message 264: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments I use an open in another tab option when I browse and want to see specifics on a book

OMG! This is so funny! Perhaps the GR algorithm or whatever it is "thought": " Oh, you read too much of this. Try reading something completely different!"

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments (as mod)

GR says that because we're reading Sorrowland, we should read The Tea Dragon Society.

*blink*

I agree that

a) everyone should read Tea Dragon
b) you might need something cute after Sorrowland

but they're not exactly similar?!

All of them have an ear collection?

message 272: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Because you enjoyed A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History:
Ten Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby

I read this over a year ago, so EXCELLENT timing for relevance, Goodreads. Not like I'm not actively reading two other books on similar themes that you could've used instead or anything.

Because you read The Echo Wife:
Daddy Hugs

"Now Baby and Daddy can cuddle and count along with this hug-and-read book perfect for Baby's teeny, tiny hands."

Goodreads is trying really hard to make us read something outside of our preferred genres!

Oh my! It's only 32 pages.

message 277: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Yes, I would've definitely made sure it made a mod poll if it wasn't under 170 pages :D

message 278: by Karin (last edited May 29, 2022 02:21PM) (new)

Karin Because you enjoyed Apples Never Fall
you might enjoy
A Scot in the Dark (Scandal & Scoundrel, #2)

Yes, because of course reading a Moriarty novel about a missing woman and a dysfunctional family is akin to reading the second book in a Regency romance novel series with a punny title...

message 279: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Here's a fun one! Not recommended to me, but I was looking for recommendations for a challenge I'm doing, and just got a kick out of this.

In the "Books similar to" listing for The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession with Virginity is Hurting Young Women is this book:

The Hands-Off Investor: An Insider’s Guide to Investing in Passive Real Estate Syndications

O_O

message 280: by Nelle (new)

Nelle (isabeaublue) | 23 comments I...don't even understand. Sorry for the TMI, but Goodreads thinks b/c I'm currently reading The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah (very good so far, btw), I should check out VAGINAL CARE 101: The A To Z Of How To Maintain A Healthy, Fresh And Tight Vagina!... *blushes forever and runs away*

kids = check
obviously (insert sarcasm emote here) they're woke because they aren't all white = check
one of the reviews mentioned black power brother and patriotic father = possible check?

message 298: by Ky (new)

Ky | 23 comments Haha, I suspect it's because both books have a group of children cooperating in some way (according to the description of Communism for Kids, which does read like educational material for younger readers). Nevertheless, it made me laugh. Absurd, indeed.

Allison, haha. Let me know how it goes!

message 299: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Because you are currently reading Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy's Guide to the Constitution:

Because you are currently reading Nettle & Bone:
Yes Yes More More

I approve of the title, but the book itself doesn't seem like a good match :)
