Shomeret | 1490 comments October is usually a busy month. There was my birthday weekend and a Day of the Dead celebration. But I think the main reason why I had so few reads is because I was blindsided by a Kindle read that turned out to be gargantuan.

1)Paper Son by S. J. Rozan (mystery) 312 pages. Source: Library Started: 10/1 Finished: 10/9

Why Read: I love Lydia Chin and this story of a relative in jail in Mississippi definitely intrigued me. I'd been waiting for it to come in from the library for months.

Comments: We certainly learned a great deal about Lydia's family and the history of the Chinese in Mississippi which I knew nothing about. I gave it a B+

2)Uncanny Magazine Issue 24: Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction! Special Issue ed. Dominik Parisien and Elsa Sjunneson-Henry (science fiction magazine) Source: free from Uncanny Magazine due to support of Kickstarter Started: 10/10 Finished: 10/27!

Why Read: Uncanny has been doing a series of special issues composed of contributions from marginalized groups. I am interested in reading work from disabled authors so I supported the Kickstarter. But this was the read that ate October. I read a different book on my birthday and put it aside for one day, but that means this magazine still took 17 days to read. Yikes!

Comments: There were two great stories, two articles that were very thought provoking, a moving poem and several very interesting personal essays. I gave it a B. See my review at

3)Blackbird Blues by Jean K. Carney (historical fiction) Source: Review copy from publicist Started: 10/27 Finished: 10/30

Why Read: This was a first novel about a girl in Chicago in the early 1960's who wanted to be a jazz singer. It was also about illegal abortion.

Comments: The characterization was complex. I gave it a B+ See my review at https://shomeretmasked.blogspot.com/2...

To Be Continued...

Ann (annrumsey) | 16957 comments Shomeret: I also enjoyed the family backstory and history in Paper Son. At least the gargantuan Kindle read included several enjoyable parts! I've found that mixed content books/publications sometimes seem to take longer to allow for introspection between the different parts. Not a bad thing!
