Challenge: 50 Books discussion

Hi there! Not sure if there are any rules, but do shorter books like teen novels (if you aren't a teen but just read them occasionally) and graphic novels count? I need opinions!

If you read through some of the lists you will notice that this is a personal decision. There are so many different types of literature out there that it would be silly for one person to decide what counts. Count your books in a way that works for you and what you want to accomplish. Some people count graphic novels, books on tape, and YA books while other don't or keep separate lists for some, such as books on tape. There really aren't any "rules".

I read a lot of Janet Evanovich (because they are quick reads and fairly mindless). I love those books and have counted them on my list. However, one of my reasons for taking on this challenge was to expose myself to new authors, genres, challenges that I may otherwise ignore/overlook. I have actually toyed with the idea of not counting my Evanovich books b/c I read them so quickly and they don't add to the challenge I set for myself. For now I am counting them, but that may change later.

Hi! No rules except the your personal rules and expectations to get to 50 books. I'm going to be reading some teen novels this year. My personal rule for teen novels is no less than 180 pages or a a novella type book. I also evaluate the subject and content.

If you spend time to read the material I think it should count. As far as the graphic novels go I would question how quick you are going through them. The "V for Vendetta" and "The Crow" graphic novels are decently thick with content so yeah. I guess if you don't feel challenged that would be a good indicator too.

Thanks everyone! I think I will count graphic novels because for me they are a challenge. I grew up not really surrounded by graphic novels, and I find the whole concept fascinating. I am working on the Buddha series which is actually quite long. Thanks for your input!

You know, I love graphic novels too, and I think that even if they are shorter in length, there is a whole other aspect of taking them in, both through words and through images. And you can't really skim over the images because sometimes you get information from them that's not in the dialogue, and I love that. So I agree, I'm all about including graphic novels. I actually just had to put one down because it was so annoyingly bad, and I've never had that experience with a graphic novel before. Don't ever read Stray Toasters. It's bad.
