I was put off a bit in the first chapter when the sawed off 30 06 was mentioned. A 30 06 is a rifle, not a shotgun and I couldn't think of any reason someone would saw one off. It quickly became clear that the author had a shotgun in mind and was aiming for some detail that would add verisimilitude but (as so often happens with sawed off weapons) accuracy suffered.
