Bill Kupersmith | 125 comments 'If Mr. Casaubon read German, he would save himself a great deal of trouble' (Ch. xxi). Casaubon is not only physically & psychologically unfitted to be Dorothea's husband, but as Ladislaw knows (& George Eliot too, as she translated German scholarship) Casaubon's ideas are totally out of date & an utter waste of time. Dorothea is now realising what a huge mistake she made.

Hilary (agapoyesoun) Yes, Bill, I agree about poor old Casaubon. He is unfortunately no match for Dorothea, but seems to be ditheringly or perhaps blissfully ignorant of this at present. It's a while since I read this, but I thought I'd like to refresh my memory with your comments. I'd read it again now, but I'm afraid I'm oversubscribed!
