colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Oh, yeah, I guess I technically also started Unfettered, but I've only read the first one so far.

message 102: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) Over the holidays and shortly after, I finished Cast in Secret, Hogfather (audio), and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Obsidio was shuffled aside temporarily, but I'm back on it. Fun book. :)

In audio I'm now listening to Emma, which should go quickly because I'm very familiar with it.

Coming up soon is Arrows of the Queen for a BR I started with another group, and A Train of Powder for my classics challenge, in the "essay collection" category.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I read Arrows of the Queen some years ago but never went on to the next book ( Arrow's Flight ). So, when I noted the book on your post I went to the library sight and placed a hold on it.

Yet another book to fit into my reading schedule.

:)

Oh right now I'm finishing up Sin Eater and trying to fit The Warrior in. I just finished The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert: An English Professor's Journey Into Christian Faith, First Login, Edge of Valor and Requiem for Medusa.

message 104: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) Good to have you, Mike. Hope to see you in the thread over there. :)

message 105: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Returned to Michael Grant's Gone series with Plague, which I'm enjoying so far.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I don't know. I'm not here as much as I used to be but I try to get by the sight at least once a day.

:)

message 107: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Aside from Unfettered, I'm just randomly reading comics. Just finished the God of Thunder run of Thor. Not sure what I'll get to next.

message 108: by Sarina (new)

Sarina Langer (sarinalangerwriter) | 12 comments I started the audio book of Throne of Glass this week and am really enjoying household chores now! Thank you, audio books! XD

message 109: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I finished my two nonfictions yesterday, so now I've just got Unfettered. But I do have Mystery Man due at the library in a week so I'll probably be starting that one later. I'm not generally a reader of this genre, but my friend recommended it and said it was hilarious, so... I'll give it a shot.

message 110: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I didn't read them. Oh lord.

message 111: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh my. Well. This should be interesting.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Just started The Girl from the Well The Girl from the Well (The Girl from the Well, #1) by Rin Chupeco . It came from the library. The Japanese legend of the long haired girl (note Ring and other sources) is one of the horror movie/fiction tropes that really freaks out my daughter. Book looked interesting.

Also have Kill Bin Laden A Delta Force Commander's Account of the Hunt for the World's Most Wanted Man by Dalton Fury in from the library but haven't started it yet.

This of course means all MY books got back to waiting.

message 113: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nope. No. I have changed my mind. I am not reading this Mystery Man book. When the very first scene is a non-consensual sex scene, where the main character wants to say no and knows she should but just doesn't, and then goes on to say that the sex she didn't want in the first place was "good"... I just don't think that this book is for me, especially not right on the heels of a book about rape culture.

So, back to the library it goes, and off of my Goodreads shelves it poofs.

I liked the reviews I read but NOPE. Will pass, lol.

Ugh and eeewww. I agree.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Finished it last night. It's more told from her point of view. Actually it's not a bad book, I'll probably go 3 or 4 stars. Not what I usually read but found it interesting. It's not really a traditional horror.

message 117: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Jan 10, 2020 07:37AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Reading Quarry now (wasn't in the mode to go on with the Bin Laden book). Also finished Sin Eater, bit of a disappointment after the first book in the series.

message 118: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Read Mid-Lich Crisis. Fantasy told from villains point of view. It was... ok. Humor just didn't hit the mark for me.

message 119: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I've been having trouble settling on books lately, but mostly I'm rereading Shadowmarch, and also reading The Lost Heiress. I actually like Tad Williams' Shadowmarch series a bit more than his Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series, though most of his fans feel the opposite.

message 120: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I haven't been reading much of anything lately. I have mostly just been playing Skyrim. Again. LOL

I'm technically reading the second book of the Penn Cage legal thriller series Turning Angel, and nominally reading the BOTM Unfettered.

I did finish two short Audible books about dogs... Cesar Millan's Guide to Audiobooks for Dogs & Cesar Millan's Guide to Bringing Home a Shelter Dog.

So... yay! Accomplishments!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Just finished The Runelords and have the second book ready and waiting.

Gabrielle (songguardian) | 10 comments Currently reading Vicious and The Starless Sea. Both are really entertaining but I'm leaning towards the Starless Sea based on the prose. Also working through Red Rising, The Shadow of What Was Lost and still reading The Way of Kings.

I don't think I could read that many books at the same time without getting the narratives confused!

I'm continuing with Michael Grant's Gone series, having started Fear a couple of days ago.

I usually read a bunch of books at the same time anyway just because one day I’ll be in the mood for one book and another day be interested in another.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Picked up Arrow's Flight. I read the first in this series a long time ago. They seem a bit young but I've been meaning to try this one. I'll go a few chapters.

message 126: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Read The Goblin Emperor today. Decent story. Bit of a lull in the middle, but a nice relaxing read.

Gave it a 3, but it's closer to a 3.5 to me.

btw, so nice to be to read a normal pace after Unfettered...so damn long.

That's cool. I do that sometimes with anthologies. I'll read 1-2 stories in one before switching to stories in another.

Beth (rosewoodpip) Greg wrote: "I don't think I could read that many books at the same time without getting the narratives confused!"

I always have an audiobook going, and one or two "black and white" books, but they all have to be very different from each other. I mix things up between non-fiction, fantasy, SF, classic, etc.

Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Picked up Arrow's Flight. I read the first in this series a long time ago. They seem a bit young but I've been meaning to try this one. I'll go a few chapters."

I just finished the first one, Arrows of the Queen! The BR I set up for it seems not to have been successful, but no big deal, I enjoyed reading it on my own. A nice cozy story that feels a little old-fashioned today.

That one sounds interesting. I’m adding it to my TBR.

I love that series. I should jump in with you.

message 131: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) It was fun! it's also interesting to see how the genre's changed since then. Huge passages of exposition are not smiled on these days.

Another book completion for me is Emma in audio. It's the longest of Austen's novels, and my poor variety-obsessed brain wants a break from her for a while, even though I have only more book to go to have read them all. Later, Jane!

I'm about halfway done with a couple of books mentioned upthread, A Train of Powder (slow going) and Obsidio (also slow going for no conceivable reason, it's a YA ffs). After that it's on to Uprooted for another BR. And after that I'm done with BRs for a few weeks.

message 132: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm reading The Wicked King - book 2 of the Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black. I was sort of putting it off, but I'm enjoying it, for the most part - even if the MC is a bit annoying.

(One thing I get tired of in first person narratives, though, is when the inner monologues are circular and repetitive. Like, I know that that's how it works in real life - especially when people are obsessing on something - but it's annoying in books.)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Yep. Agree.

message 134: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) I've seen it in third person, too. For example, in Foreigner, Bren spends 95% of the book pondering alternatives and second-guessing himself.

True, and I can think of a few, but I feel like I encounter it way more often in the 1st person ones.

message 136: by Felina (new)

Felina I’m reading the HF book for next month My Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. I’m obsessed with Hamilton since I saw the musical so I’m jumping on this one.

I’m due to start Foundation and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter after or during. Depends on how I feel. I’m trying to get more genre’s in this year.

A couple people have posted in the thread besides me, so I feel a little more confident that it won't be a deserted thread with just me sitting in it. Hooray! This read will be going on for a couple more months (we're reading a book a month), so feel free to jump in any time, MrsJ.

Ala | 469 comments Finished Orconomics today. Better than I thought it would be. Pretty predictable but still enjoyed the journey.

message 139: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Read Son of a Liche last night. Pretty good sequel to Orconomics.

message 140: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Finished reading Fear yesterday, when I started the last book in the series - Light. Looking forward to completing the series but might take a break before starting the follow-on one of Monster.

message 141: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I think I'm officially going to DNF the group read. Sorry folks. I'm just not feeling it.

Otherwise, I'm reading two books: A Simple Plan & Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America.

Beth (rosewoodpip) No shame in DNFs!

(says the person for whom every DNF, especially a group read or BR, is a permanent stain on their conscience.)

Right now, I am reading:

Obsidio - just about done
The Fellowship of the Ring in audio. (enjoying it when I don't notice the otherwise excellent narrator smacking his lips every few seconds)
The Women of Nell Gwynne's - novella in the "Company" series

Next: Uprooted and continuing Heralds of Valdemar with Arrow's Flight. Not sure what my next audio will be, maybe The Warden narrated by Simon Vance

message 145: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL what is a "conscience"? O_o

And you cannot go wrong with a Simon Vance narrated audiobook. He's absolutely one of my favorites. :D

message 148: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Finally finished Come On Shore And We Will Kill And Eat You All: A New Zealand Story. A non-fic travelogue/memoir with lots of history, focused on the Maori of New Zealand.

The history bits were great, the personal stuff not so much.

Decent read though.

message 149: by Greg (new)

Greg | 201 comments Having finished Michael Grant's Light, a five-star-read for me although it was sad to see certain main characters die, especially towards the end of the book.

I then read After School Activities by Dirk Hunter, a male/male romance, one of a bunch of books I'd bought last year at a very reduced rate. Although aspects were a little unbelievable, this was a fun read.

message 150: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) The Fellowship of the Ring (audio) went on hold not too long after I started Uprooted (b&w). Should have seen that coming, since I really can't read two very similar books at once. Fellowship isn't on any kind of schedule, and I've been reading it off and on (mostly off) for over a year now and not feeling like I'm missing or forgetting much, so it's fine.

To replace it I started the audio of Chase Darkness with Me: How One True-Crime Writer Started Solving Murders. Not going to be winding down to sleep with this one. Yikes! :|

Last and kind of least, Arguing with Zombies: Economics, Politics, and the Fight for a Better Future in ebook fills in idle spaces, like when I want to sneak some reading in at my desk.
