Can anyone recommend authors or series that someone who doesn't normally read mysteries might enjoy?

I've been all over the place with mysteries. I started out with Agatha Christie and Edgar Allen Poe, but then moved on to the current band of Scandinavian Writers. What are your interests? DO you like certain periods like WWI or Victorian England? One of the best mystery series I've read is by Louise Penny and is called the Inspector Gamache series. Penny is an intuitive writer and creates a world that most people can relate to. There isn't a lot of blood and violence - but rather a sense of looking for justice.

I think I'd like WWII or modern mysteries. I really enjoy Foyle's War on PBS.

Charles Todd has two series in this era: Ian Rutledge series (ex-WWI soldier) and Bess Crawford mysteries (she is a nurse),Josephine Tey - Man in the Queue, or Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs. They are like eating chocolate - hard to stop reading.
