Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Katelyn,

You've got such a wide range of interests it's hard to give suggestions.

You might have better luck perusing your friends' shelves, the shelves of other members you trust, your groups, including the found books in this group.

I have the opposite problem: I find too many books I want to read.

oohhh, I second that one Fiona

Also, if you like animals--the The Black Stallion series (all 90 million or so books in it) is good

and if you want fantasy, try Victory of Eagles series--its set in Napolionic times, and the 2 main characters are Captain Lawrence and his Dragon, Temeraire. Its a YA series, but very well written.

Another series by Diana Wynne Jones is The Dark Lord of Derkholm and its companion book The Year of the Griffin

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Ooh, Dogsbody looks great. See, there's another one for my too long to-read shelf. Thanks, Fiona.

Ann, I'll check out your books too. The Black Stallion, I sort of know those stories. The Victory of Eagles, I've not heard of.

Katelyn, You say nothing scary - how do you feel about sad?

J (julip) | 57 comments If you are not familiar with Cynthia Voigt's kingdom series I highly recommend those 4. They follow each other at such a distance that you only hear a few remarks about previous characters who "existed" a generation or two before the current book's people. On Fortune's Wheel is my fave of the four, but Elske is pretty awesome too. Great adventures.

Mir | 802 comments I think Victory of Eagles is 4th or so in the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik.

If you are interested in dogs try Robin McKinley's Deerskin.

The Temeraire series is very good reading. Basically, she took the war with Napolean and added dragons--dragons that have been bred and are "paired" with not just 1 rider but some of them up to a hundred or so. Each dragon has his "captain" and his "crew"--they are part of the Navy's of the various countries. Temeraire, who is the main dragon that we follow is a Chinese Imperial dragon. His egg was being shipped to Napolean from China as a gift, when the ship its on is attacked and captured by a British man-of-war, of which Lawrence is the Captain. Because a non-imprinted dragon is considered "feral" by most of the Western world (but not in the Far East) Lawrence and his officers draw lots for who will become the dragon's new Captain (which, btw, is considered a "demotion" since the dragon corps aren't properly appreaciated by the West.) But Temeraire has a mind of his own--and refuses to have anything to do with his chosen Captain. Instead he picks Lawrence--and so the adventures begin. So far there are 4 books in the series, but I'm hoping that there are more forthcoming. Victory was just released this year (2009) so its going to be at least a while longer til the next one can be expected out. Sigh, I need my dragon fix. :oP

Jackie "the Librarian" | 218 comments I third the Temeraire series. But be careful with Robin McKinley's Deerskin. I would call it an adult book, with adult issues. It is not fun at all.

MB (What she read) | 136 comments You might try Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley instead.

If you like reading about animals, I recommend My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. It's hilarious!

Mir | 802 comments Have you read Owls in the Family by farley Mowat? It is an old one but still touching.

message 18: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Also, both very funny and sad by Farley Mowat is Never Cry Wolf Amazing True Story of Life Among Arctic Wolves , a true story of Mowat researching some Canadian wolves. Great book.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Katelyn,

I consider some parts of the Harry Potter books scary.

Recently, no scarier than Harry Potter in my opinion, I enjoyed Graceling .

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Fiona, I Capture the Castle is a great suggestion!

What about Island of the Blue Dolphins? That's a good one. Also, while not scarey, still a good story The Witch of Blackbird Pond. There isn't a real witch--just a girl in Puritan New England that people think is a witch.

Lol...Naruto Rocks! (Katelyn, Haku.) I've read Island of the Blue dolphins but the second is good!

Josie (maid_marian) | 100 comments The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale is a great YA read, with her horse and geese being quite important to the story.
I also recommend, despite their lack of animals, Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn, The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle (actually, there's a snake character in this one!), The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope, and Megan Whalen Turner's series about the thief Gen; The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia... hope you like some of those :)

message 28: by Cara (new)

Cara | 23 comments I'm not sure how old you are or what books you've read but people (including myself) are addicted to The Hunger Games and right now I'm reading it's sequel Catching Fire and I can tell it's gonna be really awesome. Not heavily animal based but they make an appearance. Falls into the science fiction genre.

message 29: by Cara (new)

Cara | 23 comments Oh yeah I second The Goose Girl and Howl's Moving Castle. Fantastic reads.

Lol...Naruto Rocks! (Katelyn, Haku.) Can you give me the links? They sound good.

message 31: by Lisa (last edited Oct 03, 2009 07:13PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Katelyn, Links to which books? Most of the ones suggested are links. Simply click on the titles and you'll get to those books.

Lol...Naruto Rocks! (Katelyn, Haku.) Sorry, got confused.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments I just moved this thread to the Just to Chat folder. I'm hoping it will always be open because there will be more book suggestions. I hope that is okay.

message 35: by Frannie (new)

Frannie Burd Kately, I'm not sure if anyone suggested this one to you, but A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my alltime faves. It's not a fantasy or about animals; it's about a young girl growing up in Brooklyn in the "olden days". Suggested it to my daughter, and she loved it, too. Happy reading!

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments A long time ago I read a cute "fish out of water" book about a guy and his wife who move from Manhattan to a tiny New England town, and all of the misadventure and misfortune that follows. It was hilarious, and I couldn't put it down. A few years later they made it into a movie, and while the movie was cute enough, it left out huge chunks that made the book so endearing. I always post a similar note because when people see the tile, the seem to just remember the mediocre movie. Give it a try - I doubt you'll regret it.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) That was a Chevy Chase movie right?

I'd recommend Cary Grant and Myrna Loy in 'Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream-House'

Yes. Chevy Chase was the only real "big name" in the movie. The book was absolutely hilarious. Then I gave it to my dad and he laughed for a few days until he was done.

In the book, Andy Farmer befriends some oddball brothers who live in the area, and they are virtually left out of the movie. They also left out a part where he's drinking, his wife pulls his keys, and he drives the tractor, and there's an accident on a county line, and the ensuing argument is classic. My favorite part is where he and the brothers try to rig a BINGO game, but I don't want to give away any more of that part. I never laughed so hard in my life.
