Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments Absolutely, Lori. In fact, it was one of the books I had in my mind when I wrote the task.

April Books

message 7: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments For sport Nay I am currently reading A Study in Silks which is set in April. The Louise Penny #3 The Cruelest Month I believe refers to April. Claims to be set at Easter so you could always look for Easter books and have a 50% chance they're set in April, :)

"The Cruelest Month" is a quote/reference from a T.S. Eliot poem about the cruelest month being April.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2282 comments I am still having difficulties with this Epic or High genre i have looked at all the GR award nominees this year for Fantasy not one has epic or High - how do we sort the wheat from the chaff so that i can get the genre. I like some fantasy but am finding nothing

message 11: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Have you seen this list Marie? https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/50

Perhaps not all will have high or epic specified, but I'm sure many do.

message 12: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Or this maybe, though even these don't always have it on the main page. Which is a bit strange actually, in some cases.

https://www.goodreads.com/genres/epic...

message 13: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments High or Epic fantasy is very specific fantasy. It's often serious, involving epic quests and themes. Much of what you find in these Goodreads contests is YA fantasy involving paranormal entities like witches, vampires, werewolves, etc.

I'm surprised that the Lord of the Ring books don't have Epic or High Fantasy listed since they are the quintessential High/Epic fantasy on which the genre is built. I will approve any of J.R.R. Tolkien works.

Here are some suggestions:
Theft of Swords (love love this series)
Assassin's Quest (love love this series)
Ship of Magic
The Way of Shadows
Thief's Magic
The Spirit Thief (fun series)
The Sword of Shannara
A Game of Thrones
A Song for Arbonne
Pawn of Prophecy
Prince of Thorns
Kushiel's Dart
The Blade Itself
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
Elantris
The Element of Fire
The Dwarves
A Crucible of Souls
The Bone Doll's Twin
Blood Song

message 16: by ♞ Pat (last edited Dec 25, 2019 12:28PM) (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments I have a question about
Task #2 Nay
Requires a book from a trilogy.

I would like to read
No Country for Old Gnomes (The Tales of Pell, #2) by Delilah S. Dawson No Country for Old Gnomes which is book 2 in a series of what is currently three books.

Tales of Pell Three Book Series

It doesn't specify that this is a trilogy, it's possible there MAY be other books to come since it's a new series, but I don't know for sure since I've only read the first book in the series at this point.

Would you accept this book as part of a trilogy at this point or should I go hunting for something different?

Series can be tricky monsters. At this point, Tales of Pell has 3 books published so we will call that a trilogy. If you chose to read No Country for Old Gnomes in January, you're safe. But if you hold off until October, and a 4th book is published in the series between now and then, it will no longer count. So timing is sensitive.

We did a whole year of killings series as an annual challenge. We learned all about series, sub-series, time sensitive publishing dates, the whole works. You'd think I would have learned my lesson then, but I still include series tasks. LOL!

message 18: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments Thanks, Janice. I don't know that I'll get it read in JANUARY, but hopefully well before a fourth book shows up to wreak havoc on my plan!

message 19: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice, what are the rules again for expected publications? And does it make a difference whether a sequel has a set future publication date (eg will be published April 20) or whether it's merely announced (like there will be a book 4 and it's in GR, but no title, cover, or pub date yet)?

message 20: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 25, 2019 09:08PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments Peggy, we're only going to consider published books. If a series shows 4 primary works and there are only 3 books published, it will be considered a trilogy until the 4th book is published. People will need to be checking their series before reading/reporting to make sure additional books haven't been published.

An example is The Legends of the First Empire It shows as 6 primary works, but right now, there are only 4 books that are published. The 5th book is being published Feb 4, 2020. The 6th and final book is being published in May 2020.

You will want to schedule your read according to publishing dates if you want to use this as a 6 book series.

Viji, I'm not Janice, but even I can see there are sheep on those two covers. I am unsure why you need a ruling.

Edit: "Think like Janice" - the first is probably too small and won't count. The second seems clear to me. She catches my eye

Thanks, Rusalka. The first one has more no. of the sheep and the second one has only one. That's why I was not sure and needed a ruling. Now, I am waiting to hear about the third one I posted so that I could settle on a book for this task.

message 26: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments No to A Winter's Hope. No to A Summer Down Under. Yes to An Important Family.

"Think like Janice" means that the sheep is prominent on the cover. It's the focus and catches your eye right away. The two books I disallowed do have sheep on them, but they are not the focus, nor are they prominent. You have to really look at the cover to see them. I look at those book and immediately think, "Oh, there's a person, or there's a couple on them,"

I am glad I got the Nay for this task, Lucy. I only have to read a book about an orphan or a book with Orphan in the title. I will be reading The Orphan's Tale, which I own.

I looked over my list and I can add another to the lists above with Child 44. I think this was a group read at one time, as was The Snow Child, in the first list from Janice.

message 35: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1506 comments Janice,
I apologise if I have missed a discussion about this previously. I have just noticed I’ve got the same task on 2 different cards:

Task: Setting is during the month of April or the word “April” is in the title.
The task is for Card 1 Sport Nay, and also for Card 21 History: Nay.
Is this right?

message 36: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, Shirley. I have both the April tasks too. I think one is set in the month of April and the other is April in the title. We talked about multiple tasks that were the same in another card, I think. I have two American Civil War tasks too.

message 37: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1506 comments Thanks Cherie. Have you had any luck finding a book set in April? I spent a bit of time today looking at other members’ plans and there’s some really good suggestions so I posted mine too in case it helps someone else.

Yes. I tried really hard to avoid duplicated tasks, but when you're writing 360 of them, things fall through the cracks.

if you read nonfiction, Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster or April 1865: The Month That Saved America both take place in April. April 1865 would also work for Civil War, if you have that task.

message 41: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Shirley - I divided up my tasks between "April in the title" - Card 1, Sport-Nay and "set during the month of April" - Card 21 History-Nay.

This is the list from "set in",

Outrun the Moon - set in April 1906 (The San Francisco earthquake and fires happened then)
A Crack in the Edge of the World - another San Francisco earthquake story, non-fiction
Airframe - Janice posted this as set in April
Hunting Houses - Janice posed this as set in April
A Study in Silks - this is a SF/Steampunk adventure set in London, April of 1888

two other April in the title books I have posted under other tasks.
April & Oliver - childhood friends
Remembering April - lips on the cover ??
