Card 5 Tasks

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice, I'm putting you right to work ;-)

Sports Nay Task - Theme of the book is food. Yum!

Is it okay if food is an important topic? In the Hannah Swensen cozy mysteries I guess the main theme would be the murder/mystery, but there's talk about food on basically every page and there are recipes in it as well. Would that work?

Yes, that would be acceptable.

Kristie | 19191 comments Peggy, I just finished Midnight at the Blackbird Café. It is a cute story with some magical realism and women's lit type clean romance. A main concept of the story is a young woman keeping her grandmother's cafe open. There is plenty of talk about pies and other food. I would say it's an important part of the story and would probably work for that task as well.

Art/literature - painting on the cover.
In the Dutch House the book cover is a painting that is referenced in the book. The Dutch House by Ann Patchett Will that work?

Yes, you can break up the set and read just one book from it.

No fangs or teeth on the cover. only feet. :o) If you were asking about Fledgling, that is.

Typo - it should read "teeth OR fangs". Was that your question? The cover doesn't have to be a vampire. It could be a wolf, a dragon.

Gulp Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton Pretty When She Dies (Pretty When She Dies, #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny, Janice, I have Dragon Teeth on Card 10 for Nay on Science "the theme of the book is dinosaurs". I did not get the teeth or fangs task.

I will go post it there. I also have another book that fits the task.

I'm going to say no. I can't determine that it's a painting, and it's not prominent enough. What is prominent is the bust. Sorry.

message 20: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Beth - while I was gophering today, I found three lists on Listipia that have paintings on the cover.

Novel Covers Using Historical Paintings
Book Covers with Art/Paintings
In a Painter's Studio

They may all have some of the same books, but it is worth a try.

I am going to read The Bellini Madonna: A Novel. I have had it on a list for the last several challenges and not read it yet. I bought it at a book sale.

Thanks, Cherie! I will probably go to those lists before the year is up.

Right now, I am just trying to see where what I already have fits, especially stuff that has been sitting around waiting for an excuse to read it... Looking for ways to use up TBR

Janice (jamasc) | 59963 comments Last year, I had a task that said "art on the cover" and it caused some confusion, so this year I thought I would clarify it more by saying "painting". It is rather subjective and I'm sorry for that. This will be one task where you'll have to explain your reasoning as to why you think it's a painting.

♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments For the Task #5 -
Nay Task - The book is positioned 0-40 on your Goodreads TBR shelf.

Unbelievable, I know, but my TBR list is empty. I create my want to read lists using my "local-library" list, which are books that cross my path that I check for my library's shelf inventory.

My actual To Read lists are exclusives titled
Challenge Choices
Winter - SRC
and
Clean Sweep 2020

Can I use one of those as my TBR, or would you prefer I move 40 books from my local library list into my Want To Read list and then choose one of those for this task?

Everyone uses TBR shelves a little differently. I have two. One is for physical books/ebooks. The other is for audiobooks. These are books I own and will read.

Go ahead and use any of the exclusive shelves you've listed. When reporting, give the list name as well as the position the book is on that list. Hehehe... that gives you a bit more options. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone.

I'm confused. The quoted text is for The Gift of Rain, but the bookcover is from Harry Potter. Are you asking if that cover for Harry Potter works as a painting on the cover? If so, I would say no. It doesn't look like a painting to me.

You go with the first one that comes up on the editions page. Unfortunately, that's the 119 page one. But, all the other editions are well over the 175 page requirement, and all the audiobook editions are over 7 hours long (except for the abridged editions). Perhaps this paperback is abridged as well, or in very small and tight font.

You know what? I'm going to rule that you go with the next paperback listed which is 204 pages. That's more consistent with a 7 hour audiobook.

Margo | 11654 comments Thanks janice. I thought we always went with the first hardback edition in the case of audiobooks. Thats the way I've been reporting. I will go back and change them to the correct way. All are way more than 175 pages anyway.

We changed the rules this year. A lot of books don't have hardcover editions anymore. So to make it easier, we changed it to the first print edition (hardcover or paperback) that comes up on the editions page.
