Janice (jamasc) | 59948 comments Card 19, Geography Nay task requires lips on the cover.

The Virgin Cure will work.
The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay

message 3: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Janice did you ask and answer your own question? LOL

Nay Task - There are lips on the cover.

Will either of these work?

The Turncoat's Gambit (The Inventor's Secret, #3) by Andrea Cremer The Conjurer's Riddle (The Inventor's Secret, #2) by Andrea Cremer Hush by Anne Frasier Sleep Tight by Anne Frasier

message 4: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59948 comments I was just adding a recommendation in case anyone was looking for a book that fit.

I would have to reject your selections, Jannene. Hush might work. You're going to have to look for close up of people's faces, or something where the lips are more visible than implied.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry Woman Last Seen in Her Thirties by Camille Pagán Mother Dear by Nova Lee Maier

I'm wondering about the book below. Has anyone read this? It looks to me like lightning coming from the mans body but I can't be sure.

Janice, what do you think?

The World Walker (The World Walker, #1) by Ian W. Sainsbury

I do not usually go out of my way to read horror or ghost stories, but I have a question about The Haunting of Hill House that everyone seems to have read but me. Is it? Shirley Jackson is one of my favorite authors. I'm not a big horror fan - I don't like slasher, icky, bloody books. This is a spooky read though - left me wondering. Just put timers on your lights, so they shut off when you fall asleep.

I didn't enjoy it. I was waiting to be scared reading this book. You might like it more than I did Cherie. I watch too many horror movies so it does take a lot for me to get scared and this one didn't.

message 24: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11647 comments Cherie, I'm with Jayme, I liked it a lot. It is not body horror, there is no blood spurting from torn off limbs.

I really liked this one.

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59948 comments I loved The Haunting of Hill House. The first time I read it, I was a teenager digging through my parents' collection of Readers Digest Condensed Books. I have since read the full novel and loved the movie with Liam Neeson. I'm like Dom. Not much scares me any more. Oh, Hex did.

For gentle ghost stories, I'd recommend Simone St. James - The Haunting of Maddy Clare, and The Broken Girls are a couple that I've read. I have Lost Among the Living slated for that task.

I have had A Darker Shade of Magic on my TBR forever - it has map grids in both the red and black circles on the cover. (book is about magicians with ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, Black)

Is this prominent enough Janice?

Kristie | 19180 comments wow...I'm so glad you split these up this year. There is already so much to go through for an individual card. Thank you for thinking of that.

For card 19 task 3 History: nay - The story is about the American Civil War. Would Little Women work? I haven't read it so I don't know how much the war plays a part in the novel.

My understanding is that it is more about the sisters, but it is set during the Civil War and the blurb also states, " it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America," so I wasn't sure if it fit well enough.

Little Women takes place in Massachusetts during the Civil War. Mr. March (their father who is a minister) has already gone off to serve when the story begins. And you get bits and pieces of the Civil War from some of his letters that he writes home. Because it's set in Massachusetts there isn't any actual fighting (there wasn't any fighting that far north), but you do get opinions about the war. The story is more about the relationships in the family, but you do feel the conflict and fear of the war always lurking in the background. The war is one of the reasons why they are so short of money. The war impacted people and families differently. I would say it's indirectly about the war because the safety of their father is the center thing on everyone's mind.

My favorite book growing up :)

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19180 comments No worries, Janice. I listened to part of the blurb and the girls were talking/thinking about their father being away in the war. I just wasn't sure if it needed to be more about the war itself versus things occurring around the war, if that makes sense.

Thank you for that, Jayme! Janice? What do you think? Is that what you had in mind or did you want something more directly related to the fighting of the war?

I agree. I keep seeing people talking about a task and I think to myself "I don't recognise that task" and then I remember that there are some tasks that I don't need to cover because I either got the question right or wrong. I've missed out on some good tasks, although I have a lot of good ones anyway.

It sounds like the civil war is a minor theme. It's more a "setting" for the relationship in the family than direct involvement. It needs to be a major theme of the book.

I think that March would work since it's the story of their father who served as a chaplain during the American Civil War. Janice, would you accept that book?
