What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I hope that it's okay that I'm asking for help finding the name of a movie in a Goodreads group, rather than a book. As far as I know, it's not even based on a book.

Edited: since the movie is not based on a book, I have followed the directions of another member and moved this thread to the "just to chat" section.

It's about an elderly man who befriends a small group of young boys around thirteen or so years old, and becomes a father figure and Christian mentor to them. He sets several challenges for them over the course of the movie to teach them various lessons about the Christian faith.

There is a second group of boys a couple of years older than the first, all of whom start out acting as bullies to the younger boys. The elderly man tells one of these older boys that he used to know his father, who is now deceased. This boy experiences a longing to talk to the man and learn more about his father. One of the challenges that the man sets for the younger boys also includes the older one who had previously hung out with the group of bullies, and the challenge gives this older boy an opportunity to prove to the younger ones that he has had a change of heart and they can trust him now.

I can't remember the year this movie came out, if anyone ever even brought up that information. But it would have been about ten or twelve years ago that I saw it, I think, so it's probably at least that old.

Or it might have been more recent than that. I honestly can't remember for sure.

Edited again: I managed to find the name of the movie on Google, so I will be moving this thread to the Solved section. It's The Secret of Jonathan Sperry.

I finally managed to find it on Google. It's called The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry, and I included a link to the Wikipedia article in the post. I've moved this thread to the Solved section.
