Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8073 comments I of course know that. Man up, Nik, and give us ten random facts about yourself instead of critiquing the responses of others who have the guts to do it. It does take guts to reveal who you are. And is anyone else game?

I've been finding myself watching old westerns more and more in the last few years, and they lead me to a conclusion that there's a disconnect between what it meant to being a man in the olden days and what millenials think it meant being a man in the olden days.

They seem to think being a man used to mean being a misogynist piece of crap, that if you didn't go around raping or otherwise sexually assaulting women, you weren't a man. But in all those old westerns - keep in mind this was Hollywood's ideal in the 50s and 60s - the protagonists were all honorable men.

Star Trek fans today dismiss the uncomfortable misogyny of The Original Series as "that's just how things were back then," but nowhere in TV prior to that am I aware of a male lead getting creepy-rapey every episode. Maybe gender roles were dated, and maybe you'd get an occasional comment that would seem odd by today's standards, I don't recall June Cleaver ever having a reason to tweet #metoo if the internet had been around. The Lone Ranger had a healthy respect for women. Even Herman Munster and Gomez Addams were nothing but loving and caring toward their wives.

This idea that manhood is lost in this age of the empowered woman is BS. The ideals of manhood from previous decades certainly need to be updated, but the core values that underlie Hollywood's portrays are timeless. It's just an excuse when millenials get called out for treating people like garbage because really that's the opposite of what it means to be a man.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8073 comments As I've also exposed myself here, I hope it's okay to comment on your list. I've read a Harry Potter book because of my son's interest and suffered through one movie. I'd say you dodged a bullet by avoiding both. I recently saw Brad Paisley, a country singer, take suggestions from the audience and make up songs off the cuff. Can you do that with poetry? And I think I saw a UFO once from afar.

message 15: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) Yeah, I feel no guilt not reading or watching Harry Potter. I've never really had anyone ask me to write poetry on the spot but I suppose I could. Keep that UFO stuff to yourself, the government may be reading! :)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8073 comments Yeah, I should probably keep more to myself :-)
