Jeremiah Cunningham | 717 comments The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish
1 terrible star
Trim Book #28 for November

From stand-up comedian, actress, and breakout star of Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish, comes The Last Black Unicorn, a sidesplitting, hysterical, edgy, and unflinching collection of (extremely) personal essays, as fearless as the author herself.

Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany learned to survive by making people laugh. If she could do that, then her classmates would let her copy their homework, the other foster kids she lived with wouldn’t beat her up, and she might even get a boyfriend. Or at least she could make enough money—as the paid school mascot and in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype woman—to get her hair and nails done, so then she might get a boyfriend.

None of that worked (and she’s still single), but it allowed Tiffany to imagine a place for herself where she could do something she loved for a living: comedy.

The Last Black Unicorn is a perfect example of the fact that no reader should believe the press regarding a book. The little snippet makes this book sound amazing, but in reality it is easily the worst book I have read this year and one of the worst I have read in many years.

The book has no thread lacing it together, the language is beyond vulgar, and sadly, there is no redeeming value. I am honestly surprised any one was willing to put their name on this book as a ghost writer.

I do not put books down once I start them. So I finished this book, but I finished it as fast as I could because that was the best way to just be done with this book.

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2597 comments I have not put many books down once I've started them but in the past few years I've felt my time is too valuable to continue a book that I just can't get excited or even a little pleasure from. Even with that said, I'm not sure I complete passed on anything this year!

Karin | 9233 comments Wow, this book must have been the worst read ever for you. This type of book is how I finally learned to put books down if I hate them this much, but once upon a time I was like you.

message 5: by Joi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Eek- I'm sorry you didn't like this. I raved about this earlier this year on PBT and gave it 5 stars. Sorry if I led you astray!

I agree, the format of the book was non-linear at best, with not much congruency. I did the audiobook, and thought her narration really "made" the book, and the vulgarity was very authentic in the situation. If I remember correctly, I compared it to a comedy set- not really like a traditional book.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Are you a Tiffany Haddish fan? This is definitely targeted to her fan base. Her comedy is, indeed, vulgar >:-) Why did you pick this up!? (LOL)

I think for an outside-the-box memoir for a comedian, it sounds like Little Weirds by Jenny Slate could be a good read.

It ended up on my list because for some unfathomable reason it won a Goodread's Choice Award. Then when I created my list for Trim I included a bunch of the winners and unfortunately for me this one was picked. I am glad it was relatively short at least.

It ranks among the worst ever. There was just no point to the book. Honestly, she has no right to be writing a memoir. She hasn't done anything of note.

You didn't lead me astray, no need to worry.

HAHAHA, unfortunately I don't think I am going to read this. I love her as a comedian / actor, but not that interested in her personal life.

Ditto. I guess we'll never know, lol.

Asvoria K. | 1 comments I'm crying when I realised so many 5 stars on this book.
I rated 1 star because of the Roscoe chapter.
And I deeply in concern since Tiffany Haddish is such an influential celebrity.
I feel that PWDs are now being a joke and I'm so sad, so troubled, and I ask why? Why so many people think it is funny?
If the story is real, Roscoe is gone, he could have killed himself due to the heart break. It's such a troubling chapter to read. I got insomnia just because of this chapter.
