jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Welcome to Toppler by the Numbers!

Since everyone did so great in the last Toppler, this one is my gift to you.

You can make this as easy or as hard as you want. Pick a number between 0 and 99. If you think you might read more than one book, choose all of your numbers now. There is no penalty if you choose extra numbers. Actually, it's encouraged so you can plan your books ahead of time. Then, go to the Sign Up Your Numbers topic and report your numbers. This must be done before gophering or choosing your books. There's no fun in picking a book and then a number to fit!

Now, what are you going to do with those numbers?
Your book must have the number you chose in the number of pages, or the publication date (month or year). Books will have to be read in the order of the numbers picked - first you have to read the book chosen for the first number picked, and then the book for the second number, and so on.

The easy way is to pick a number between 0 and 9. The harder you want to make it, the higher the number you'll pick. For numbers between 10 and 99, they must be in that order (If you choose 64, then your book could have 264 pages, but not 614 or 460. Your publication date would have to be XX64, unless you go for something published in 164X). So the higher your number, the fewer your options.

Now you're ready for some gophering!

This Toppler is one day long. It will begin on December 6th at noon EST and end at noon EST on the 7th. Daylight savings time has ended here in the US for those calculating the time difference.

A few rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in this time period to qualify.
2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook. For the last two use the page numbers on the first edition that comes up on the GR page.
3. Each book must be at least 175 pages.
4. Toppler books can count toward the monthly challenge, the group theme read, and the yearly challenge if they qualify.
5. You may plan ahead and chose books for the challenge, but you are not restricted to those books. You may swap them out at will.

I don't think we get points for the 24 hour topplers - just have to finish it. Unless J'mom has something up her sleeve ;-)

message 8: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Was going to join in but will have to opt out. I will look forward to following along and adding more books to my TBR shelf :)

Ah, okay. I was thinking that if smaller numbers are easier, what would be the point of picking a bigger number unless there were more points for it? Or just for the fun of a challenge? But then a person could pick 99 if they want to read a book written in 1999, or 19 if they want to read a book written in the 20th century, etc.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's more to make it challenging for ourselves just for the fun of it - to string the gophering out if we want to or for those who have little time over the busy December, we can go for the simplicity of an easier number. The simplicity is ideal for me this month - simple and short both sound good to me!

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Goodness, J'mom! We keep doing this - coming up with similar themes for our challenge/toppler. My challenge has number of words in the title, and your toppler is all about numbers too.

I know! I also kept thinking how it tied in with this month's group read - which is why I didn't allow the number in the title. I thought (briefly) about postponing this one until April, but I already had it written out.

Sarah's right, there are no points for this Toppler. It's just for fun. December gets really busy for a lot of people, so I want it to be easy enough for anyone, but with the option of making it harder.

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Ah okay. Well, I picked some easy numbers for myself. :-)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2280 comments good luck all i won't be able to join in as the date is my granddaughter's birthday. Daddy is in the RAF and just gone out on tour so we will have a busy day trying to make it special for her

Lara | 1426 comments I'm in! It should be a decent time for me as I won't have a ton of work to do next weekend.

argh!

message 19: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments That was my response when I checked on the Toppler and saw the date! It's only a week away! Well, then we can focus on the holidays, so it's, not so bad. Just soon.

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments Cannot join you this time... I have a lot of things planned for next weekend and will probably end up not opening a book at all! :(

Have a great one, all of you!

message 21: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm going to have limited access to GR for part of the week, but I should be back by Saturday. My laptop has gone to the doctor, and the ancient one isn't allowing internet access for GR. We have company at work, so can't sneak on except at break.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments It's more every time I blink I seem to loose a week!

Hope your computers get better Jmom.

Lara | 1426 comments Ack! The Toppler starts in less than 14 hours! Time to get my reading in order...

message 26: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I kept thinking I didn't know what I was reading, and finally realized I already had my first book at home and got the hopeful second one from the library today.

message 27: by Pragya (last edited Dec 06, 2014 06:33AM) (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4030 comments 2.5 hours to go for the toppler. I finished my current read, put my kindle on charge and The Paper Magician has been downloaded.

The other two books The Great Gatsby and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl are waiting on my bookstand.

I am looking at 700 pages in 24 hours amidst a meeting and quite some other work. Let' see.

Now I will finish some work before the clock strikes 12 (or rather 10:30pm in my side of the world).

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments 1.5 hours to go. I'm sitting in my jammies under a quilt just putzing around on the computer. I'm ready to go with Devil in a Blue Dress to start when j'mom tells us to fire our engines Kindles, iPads, or crack open a paperback.

message 29: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments I am on my jammies too it is going to be a good day to read

message 30: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I'm in my jammies too. I got a bit confused with the Toppler and thought it started at midnight, so I've read a book already and realised that it doesn't count (but I enjoyed reading it anyway!) and now I am planning some books to start reading at 5pm (UK time), when the Toppler starts. :-)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I've decided it's a jammies day, too. I can do that since it's just John and I now and we don't expect company. I made a great Turkey Tetrazzini last night with the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers. That will re-heat nicely for a no-prep dinner tonight.

I have 3 audiobooks lined up for the Toppler, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Tobacco Road, and The Screwtape Letters.

On my knitting needles I have my first attempt at War and Peace Socks. For this project you knit 2 socks at once, once inside the other. Tolstoy mentioned this method in War and Peace, telling of the children's delight at watching the matron finish off a pair, pulling the second sock out of the first. Hopefully I'll make a lot of progress on them while listening to my books.

message 32: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments Theresa, That sounds like a good project with socks. I would like to learn to knit someday. An audio sounds good I may listen a bit today too I have The Illustrated Man on overdrive.

message 33: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I don't plan on changing out of my pajamas all day. This never ending rain is annoying for the dogs, and it may have me napping some, but it's good for reading.

message 34: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Theresa, your post made me realize that I don't have any food in the house. I may have to go out - have audiobook, can travel.

Knitting two socks at a time, one inside the other sounds like a quick way to knit a pair of socks. I'm not sure I could do that and concentrate on my audiobook.
