Jennifer | 2 comments Hi, this is my first post as a Goodreads Librarian. I just read and reviewed this wonderful book, and the incorrect entry of the title is what prompted me to become a Goodreads Librarian. You can see on the cover that the subtitle of this book is: Parents, children and the search for identity, Not, as in existing title: A Dozen Kinds of Love. I have this ISBN copy beside me as I write this, and I can see the ISBN is as entered here. Is it OK to go ahead and change the subtitle entry? I know this is something we are warned against in the manual, but I know that this is a mistake.
I thought I better ask before I go ahead and arrogantly change it.

Z-squared | 8576 comments Should be OK to change. Whatever is on the cover is what should be on the book record. It's always a good idea to check the librarian edit log to make sure there's been no hanky-panky with cover changes, but the log in this case looks kosher. And of course a book in the hand from a user is always pretty weighty evidence as well. My guess is that the book record was created pre-publication, and then the subtitle changed prior to publication but was never updated here, even when the cover was added.

Short answer: feel free to change it.

Jennifer | 2 comments Thanks very much! Will do.

Jen Minkman (jenminkman) | 21 comments I edited this book for a fellow author and she recently decided to change the title of her book due to racist connotations she never intended. Black Face, White Face is now called Half Face.

It now looks like this >

http://www.amazon.com/Half-Face-young...

Could someone please change this without deleting the entire book? She has quite a few reviews. The only thing that changed is the title (and the cover, obviously). If someone needs to make a new edition because the old one can't be deleted, please make this the primary edition! Thanks :)

Z-squared | 8576 comments Hi Jen,

Goodreads policy is to keep all published covers because users like to shelve the edition that matches the one they own. Instead, we create alternate cover editions (ACEs), and the author has the ability to set the new cover as the default edition.

I have created an ACE with the new title/cover here:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

I also reverted the title change you made to the old edition -- book info MUST match the cover provided on a given record. Unfortunately, Goodreads does not grant author status to book editors, so I had to remove you from the book record as well.

Librarians cannot set the default edition, only authors can (and they have to claim their Goodreads profile first). Feel free to let the author know that she can claim her profile here:

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Just scroll down to the bottom and click on "Is this you? Let us know." After she has claimed her profile, she will be able to set the new cover as the default by following the instructions here:

https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3...

Thanks! Sorry I couldn't find this thread anymore... I will let the author know that she needs to change the primary edition!
