Nancy (paper_addict) Buddy read with us, The Golden Torc, in January 2020.

Try to mark spoilers and say what chapter you are up to.

Jennifer | 185 comments I have started this already. I will wait for January before I make any spoilers.

Every time I read the word "fewkin" I think of Ewan McGregor and Trainspotting

Nancy (paper_addict) I’ll be starting this in a day or two. Probably tomorrow.

Jennifer | 185 comments I am almost done.

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I will start in a few days. Finishing up another series. Looking forward to continuing the journey of the travelers.

Jennifer | 185 comments I left my book at work. Ugh.

Nancy (paper_addict) Jennifer wrote: "I left my book at work. Ugh."

Again?

Nancy (paper_addict) I started. I forgot about the group going to the capital.

Nancy (paper_addict) I finished part 1.

Jennifer | 185 comments The second part of the group has a completely different kind of experience.

Nancy (paper_addict) I stopped reading for the night when I saw part 2 began with Felice.

Nancy (paper_addict) I don’t trust Aiken.

Nancy (paper_addict) Oh my...there is a lot of scheming and plotting going on....

Jennifer | 185 comments Nancy wrote: "Oh my...there is a lot of scheming and plotting going on...."

Its so full of politics. But it sounds like we human had a hand in everything.

Nancy (paper_addict) I am at part 2, ch 10

Nancy (paper_addict) Started part 3 and read the first 2 chapters.

Nancy (paper_addict) I finished! We find out what happens to Lugonn’s golden torc, finally. LOL

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments I finished as well. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I will miss certain characters more than others.

Nancy (paper_addict) I was wondering if Mercy knew (view spoiler)

Lizz Taylor | 218 comments Nancy wrote: "I was wondering if Mercy knew [spoilers removed]"

I agree. I wondered about Mercy myself. I think the Galactic Milieu knows more than we realize and it will come out in the next book.

Nancy (paper_addict) There are two books left and a whole other series about the Galactic Milieu. I hope the answer is not in the other series!

Jennifer | 185 comments I finished. That was some (view spoiler)

Nancy (paper_addict) Jennifer wrote: "I finished. That was some [spoilers removed]"

I know right?!

I was thinking about all the changes they must be making to the geography, or did they?

Nancy (paper_addict) How did I finish before you?

I really don't know. That would be a fun geography search though. You finished before me because I kept forgetting my book at work.

Also...did I miss is it, I mean, (view spoiler)

I did like the battle scenes and then the little chapters of the (view spoiler) ......I felt bad for all the animals.

Jennifer | 185 comments Frankly, I don't think I wold be opposed to wearing a Gold torc myself...I mean, a tool to unlock our higher dormant functions.

Regarding Felice (view spoiler)

There are some things I like about the meta physical abilities and some I don’t. Like people probing your thoughts are a no. Not everyone was good at blocking their thoughts. There is always someone more powerful that can get through. I don’t like that lose of privacy.

Nancy (paper_addict) I liked that we got to learn about the Tanu and Firvulag history.

Jennifer | 185 comments Nancy wrote: "I liked that we got to learn about the Tanu and Firvulag history."

I wish we learned a little more about Brede. She was something else all together. But their history was interesting and I appreciate they said to hell with a civilized society, we want to keep out old ways and gave their planet the finger . They were all willing to work together for something they believed in.

Nancy (paper_addict) Jennifer wrote: "Nancy wrote: "I liked that we got to learn about the Tanu and Firvulag history."

I thought Brede was the original species and the Tanu and Firvulag evolved from them. Brede’s race colonized other planets and this group stayed behind and changed. It was kind of weird though that the Tanu could have Firvulag babies but not the other way around. It would make sense that they evolved differently living apart and in different environments except for the Tanu having Firvulag babies. Then they seem more like a “birth defect.”

Jennifer | 185 comments There are also The Howlers, who changed so much due to the radiation...

Nancy (paper_addict) Jennifer wrote: "There are also The Howlers, who changed so much due to the radiation..."

That’s right. I think by the end they had moved out of the radiation areas.

I think the former nun told them the radiation was their problem. I forgot her name. Something with an A.....

I thought it was Claude who pointed it out to them but maybe it was Annamaria.

Jennifer | 185 comments It was Claude who told them about the radiation. They scoffed at him in the beginning.

What about the half Tanu/Human woman Kaitlyn who ran off with the Howler Sugall? (did I spell that right?) , what will their kids look like. I hope they got away in the flood.

That’s was an interesting pairing. It will be interesting to find out who survived the flood.

Then what’s her name and Stein are pregnant again aren’t they? But they are both human, so nothing special there. LOL

But the baby could have latent capabilities. And what about Aiken and Mercy? And the Old Craftmaster and Raimio ( I kinda forgot about him), poor man. he was tortured . There were some interesting pairings. And what about the little Rama , putting on the torc. He remembered and went back to it.

Jennifer | 185 comments I feel like there were more Fiervelag that survived than Tanu.

Nancy (paper_addict) Yes! There must be a reason the little Rama was there at the end picking up that Golden Torc.

I am wondering if Mercy will continue to want power and will support Aiken be his queen perhaps)? She has powerful abilities.

There are two more fewkin books.

I read the third (a long time ago), but was never able to get into the 4th. Maybe I will just go for it. But yeah two more fewkin books.

Nancy (paper_addict) At least it’s not like there are nine books and counting.

Speaking of longer series, I want to read the next book in The Long Earth series, The Long War.

So probably not a good idea to mention that there are actually 5 more books in this story line if you want to know all the details???

Surveillance
Metaconcert
Jack the Bodiless
Diamond Mask
Magnificat

Not really. Looking at the blurbs, they are all about the Galactic Milieu. Not the Pliocene era and the Tanu and the humans. Just the same world (sort of if you count Earth millions of years ago...).

Have you read any of them?

Do they answer the question of why the GM won’t let fully operant metaphysics go through the portal? Inquiring minds want to know, LOL.

I don't want to ruin later stories for you if you choose to read them but as I understand it, operant humans in the 22nd century are either in the coadunation (almost all) or under surveillance to make sure they are not causing issues. The possibility of uncoadunated operants not under control is forbiden due to the amount of trouble they can cause. These rules are all due to the metapsychic rebellion (human operants) that happened about 50 years prior to the start of this 4 book series.

Conal (conalo) | 4 comments All the books are tied together with the overall story being told by the narrator but each of then stands alone in terms of the events in each book series.

Saga of the Pliocene Exile - the far future that becomes the past

Intervention - the beginning of the story in terms of time frame and this ties together the Plioecene Exile with the Galactic Milieu trilogy.

Galactic Milieu trilogy - the future events that center around the metapsychic rebellion (prior to the start of the Pliocene exile).

Nancy (paper_addict) I was wondering if the other books were before the Pliocene Exile books. So some of the metaphysics and GM history would have made more sense if we had read those books first. Instead of the bits and pieces we got.
