1. A book that's published in 2020
2. A book by a trans or nonbinary author: Take Me with You. In the words of Andrea Gibson, " I explain my gender by saying I am happiest on the road when I'm not here or there, but in between, that yellow line coming down the center of it all like a goddamn sunbeam."
3. A book with a great first line: How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy Nothing is hard to do than nothing. An apt for first line for a book all about nothing.
4. A book about a book club
5. A book set in a city that has hosted the Olympics: Silver Sparrow This book is set in Atlanta, Georgia and the 1996 Olympics are mentioned toward the end. It's a great book and a great reminder the Olympics occurred on the East Coast.
6. A bildungsroman : Ordinary Girls A memoir that is probably one of the best I've read.
7. The first book you touch on a shelf with your eyes closed
8. A book with an upside-down image on the cover
9. A book with a map
10. A book recommended by your favorite blog, vlog, podcast, or online book club: Startup My Favorite Murder's Georgia Hardstark recommended this book in a 2017 episode (working my way through) and though I'm a fan of hers, this book was lacking a bit to me.
11. An anthology: Fresh Ink: An Anthology A nice collection of YA stories focused on characters of color. I generally liked it.
12. A book that passes the Bechdel test: Her Body and Other Parties This collection of short stories passes this test with flying colors, though it centers on feminism and how women's bodies are not always their own.
13. A book with the same title as a movie or TV show but is unrelated to it: Educated : Found an some films with the same name. I won't be surprised if this becomes a movie itself though.
14. A book by an author with flora or fauna in their name: Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex An interesting read!
15. A book about or involving social media: What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker: A Memoir in Essays Damon Young runs Very Smart Brothas and discusses his social media triumphs and mistakes in this set of memoir essays.
16. A book that has a book on the cover
17. A medical thriller : Smaller and Smaller Circles A novel that focuses on the work of two priests, a forensic anthropologist and a psychologist chasing a serial killer in the Philippines. Enjoyable read.
18. A book with a made-up language
19. A book set in a country beginning with "C"
20. A book you picked because the title caught your attention: What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker: A Memoir in Essays It would always interest me, but it felt especially timely during the summer of COVID-19 and racial injustice.
21. A book published the month of your birthday
22. A book about or by a woman in STEM: Radioactive: Marie and Pierre Curie, A Tale of Love and Fallout A really enjoyable, unconventional visit of Marie Curie's life alongside her husband Pierre. It also includes much more than that!
23. A book that won an award in 2019: Know My Name An absolutely incredible book that won the National Book Critics Circle Award last year. I can't recommend it more highly,
24. A book on a subject you know nothing about: Sharp Objects This book mentions the pig raising industry more than any other I've read before, and it's an interesting and not-so-subtle undercurrent to the story.
25. A book with only words on the cover, no images or graphics: Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative Like most of the book pages, the cover is written in Austin Kleon's handwriting.
26. A book with a pun in the title: All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages "All out" is a play on folks being out with their gender and/or sexual identities. It was a nice read!
27. A book featuring one of the seven deadly sins: Shutter Island Wrath was all up, down, and around this book. Violence was mentioned often, and I think Lehane begins to show it's nuances. I also think lust and pride made appearances.
28. A book with a robot, cyborg, or AI character
29. A book with a bird on the cover
The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan Birds also feature prominently in this story, so this was a perfect fit.
30. A fiction or nonfiction book about a world leader: The Autobiography of Malcolm X I was unaware of Malcolm X's reach beyond the United States during his lifetime, but knew that he's made an impact since his first speech.
31. A book with "gold," "silver," or "bronze" in the title: Darling Rose Gold I think Rose Gold took the gold for manipulation as well. .

33. A book with at least a four-star rating on Goodreads

35. A book with a three-word title - The Far Field: The ending of this book was as an astute reviewer put it, "hollow". Took a while to get into, but once I did...wow.
36. A book with a pink cover: How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy This book has lovely pink flowers and thought-provoking ideas.
37. A Western
38. A book by or about a journalist: Negroland : Margo Jefferson's memoir didn't fit the conventions of others memoirs I've read. Still, I appreciate its existence and was struck by her discussion of Black women lacking the right to be depressed.
39. Read a banned book during Banned Books Week - Sept 22-28: Their Eyes Were Watching God I didn't read it during Banned Books Week, but it's a book that's definitely been criticized on a number of dimensions. Highly recommend.
40. Your favorite prompt from a past POPSUGAR Reading Challenge (2017 #29- unreliable narrator): Leaving Time : Jenna, Virgil, Serenity, and Alice are unreliable narrators in ways I didn't expect and moved me while reading.
