"When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device."
They're not publishing non-copyrighted work. It's already copyrighted by the time they hit post/publish, and if they have it saved in any tangible form (paper, word doc, anywhere but their mind) it's copyrighted.
Registering a copyrighted work is just an extra step for legal protection of your work.

Hi, I've been considering something like this as well, but am not very familiar with Patreon and am struggling with the idea of presenting -- or what I would present to do with preparing and self-publishing my book and then soliciting payment for it.
I'm actually a teacher as well as a writer, and teach a writing workshop. But was thinking to share my learning throughout the writing and self-publishing process, and I suppose the post-production process where we get into promotion and marketing.
If you wouldn't mind, can you share more details about your project and once you've setup on Patreon?
Thanks in advance.
Vinnie.
I'm building my Patreon creative writing page and I'm halfway through the process before I launch it, but I have an important question before I do. I watched an informative inspiring video on youtube with a panel of 6 successful published authors discussing the benefits and downfalls of showcasing their writing with their paying pledging patrons and they covered nearly everything, except for 1 very important element - the issue of sharing their copyrighted or non copyrighted material. I know how the copyright process works and I don't need it explained. I registered copyrights for many of my books and I am going to register more for the remaining books I wrote. A couple of the authors said that they love sharing their work with their patrons and they love receiving feedback and 1 of the writing works they share is their short stores and chapters of books that are current WIP works in progress. The work is not finished and they are sharing excerpts with their paid pledging audience and I'm surmising that unless they are copyrighting every portion as they go, they are sharing non-copyrighted work with their patrons and I am perplexed about this. I'm trying to reach 1 of the authors on twitter. I tweeted to her last night and I hope to hear from her soon. Unless they are protected by the Writers Guild, this doesn't make sense. I don't know if I'm going to share my WIP, but I'd like to hear from other writers about this.
