I also found most of the books by Egyptian Mahfouz to have an interesting premise, "Miramar" was listed among the 60 best books in Keltainen by Helsingin Sanomat last year (I have a shelf for them, too). But I can't say I have read any of them, I just like to have them listed for whenever I want to read something different and get out of my comfort zone. And like you I know I probably won't be disappointed that often, though of course not everyone is going to like all of them.
