When you're ready to post a message, you'll see two boxes to the right of the "Post" button. One says "Add to my Update Feed" (which I usually leave unchecked) and the lower one says "Notify me when people comment in this group (which I've enabled in my profile settings, I think).
To get rid of that bookcover image, click "(edit)" next to the title of your thread. When that bookcover image images, click "Clear." (I just did it for you)
