Lizzy, this reply is a bit late but if you’re still looking for books with a character named Violet then you could try The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. One of the four children who are the main characters is named Violet.

Steve | 615 comments I don't know if there's a plan to start one of these threads for 2021, but wanted to say happy new year to everyone! 2020 was obviously a crazy year for the world, but hopefully you found some good in it!

In the middle of this pandemic, my wife and I bought a house that we love and sold our old one. Such a weird experience to go through the process with social distancing and other restrictions in place.

And, now we're expecting a baby in June 2021! Another weird experience to go through right now. We're making sure we go through life in the hard mode!

You have an option today to help out a school with books. The organization Donors Choose is set up for teachers to request items for the classroom (since most of our schools are sadly underfunded). Today there is an initiative called Fill Every Shelf, where donations for books will be doubled, or in some cases tripled because some organizations are also matching. You can go to Donors Choose and search for Fill Every Shelf to see the options.

Steve | 615 comments Man, this thread has been dead this year!

But I wanted to share that today was my baby's due date, but no sign of her yet! If she doesn't come in the next few days, we'll start inducing on Wednesday night. So I'm going to officially be a dad for the first time sometime this week! I'm so excited :)

Thank you! I'm like at that "kid before Christmas" feeling of not being able to wait! I'm also tired of having to answer "no baby yet huh?" 20x a day at work, haha.

Ann S | 624 comments Well living in seattle has its perks. Mild weather year round. Plenty of good coffee. 111 degrees outside today and half the people dont own air conditioners because we dont need them. yesterday was misery at 104. SO WEIRD MAKE IT GO AWAY.

Ann, I’m actually traveling to Seattle from Louisiana this week. This weather feels like home haha! I did check to make sure everywhere we are staying as AC though.

I'm in Seattle too, Ann - we can do it! It was easier yesterday since now I'm supposed to be working. My neighbors have a pool for their kids; I've been stopping by and dipping in.

message 328: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments lucky you have a room ready, because they are all sold out yesterday and today with some 2 stars going for 500 a night. We are not used to this. People will pay for A/C. By the time you get here it will be back to slightly above normal and life will go on. Just get me thru today. Tired of sitting in the basement watching the fruit cook on the vine.

message 329: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments The weather in the US NW and Canada right now is so crazy! I’ve heard the roads are buckling from the heat. It’s the opposite here in Albuquerque. We went from 100+ degrees last week to a high of 72 tomorrow. We are all relieved to finally get some rain! Our state opens up fully, from COVID restrictions, on July 1 so that is something else to look forward to. Hope everyone stays cool and healthy!

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1730 comments My dog caught a skunk at 3 am this morning. We now have a funny story and she had several baths outside.

I hope everyone on the west coast is staying cool.

message 331: by Ann (new)

Ann S | 624 comments I am taking two classes now. One is on diversity, which I will have to teach this fall. I have to read a lot of children's books for that class. The other is called, "Reading children's books as adults". Based on this book. Wild Things: The Joy of Reading Children's Literature as an Adult. A really interesting book. So if I have been reading too many children's books lately, that is why. I don't list them unless they have more than 200 pages.

message 332: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3840 comments Ann - I have that book on my TBR but forgot about it. I added it to my 2022 Planned Reading so I will remember it!

I’ve been refreshing my Spanish language skills using the Duolingo app and have also been reading children’s books in Spanish. My 4 year old grandson wants me to read the books to him in Spanish! So I do that and translate to English and teach him a few words. With Shark Week going on, I had checked out some dual language books on sharks. Dual language is great for me so I don’t have to look up unfamiliar words.

I need ideas for a name. I was thinking of something adventurous, or refers to pages. Ideas anyone?

I love little libraries, I feel a little bit of joy when I see one. I hope you can share a picture.

Did you come up with a name? I like the idea of adventure and pages. Not sure I have many great ideas but maybe something like the Next Page or Little Library of Untold Adventures.

Cute! This could be a tagline below the name: Turn the page for your next adventure!

Ann S | 624 comments I took a reading year off, but coming back. Hope I can get back into it. My wife of 23 years died of cancer just before Christmas, so it was a hard year. I think reading will help me move back into life. Wish me luck . Already reading KALA for the first prompt. Missed you all.

Good news! This week my husband and I brought home our baby! We've been in the adoption process for about a year and a half, and got matched a month ago. We are so happy to have our precious baby boy at home. So if I have been a little...absent...that's why!

Anyway all that to say I’ll be around and reading some prompts :)
