The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

Hello! I have been reading the Peculiar Crimes Unit series for the past few months and sadly it'll be coming to an end in a few weeks.

I have enjoyed the books, not only because of the remarkable cast of characters, but also because of all the references to London and its history, myths and legends.

I'm quite partial to London based mystery novels, so I was wondering if you had any recommendations for good modern detective stories set there.

Ben Aaronovitch's Peter Grant series is excellent (beginning with Midnight Riot/Rivers of London), and I'm quite enjoying Paul Cornell series, although I've only read the first so far, London Falling. These are both detective/police procedural series with magical/supernatural leanings.

For more straight-forward mysteries, Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne novels are excellent.

I like Barry Maitland's Brock and Kolla and Nicci French's Frieda Klein series.

Second Mark Billingham as well. And then of course is the wonderful P.D.James. But especially if you want strong London, mostly East-End women, Martina Coles. For Brighton I would recommend Peter James. I also love Nicci French's Bernadett and Venice.
