They have a list of 100 "timeless" books.
"What makes a novel “great”? At OCLC, we believe literary greatness can be measured by how many libraries have a copy on their shelves.
Yes, libraries offer access to trendy and popular books. But, they don’t keep them on the shelf if they’re not repeatedly requested by their communities over the years."
Um, looking at the list, I can see that there's likely a false assumption there. I believe that many libraries keep the canon classics on the shelves just in case someone will request them. And if nobody does, then the book stays in good condition, and doesn't get weeded for the reason of being tattered. There are a few books on that list that are bought over and over, some that probably almost never circulate, and there are missing books that don't circulate quite often enough to rebuy when worn-out.
Now, I'm not a librarian, but I have learned as much as I can about them w/out going to library school and I know two aides who have told me some things. Does anyone here know more, or have any other thoughts about the validity of this list?
