NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here .

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :-)

First stop - Saarbrücken, Germany

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Saarbrücken, Germany.

You can choose as a team to:

TASK
- Read books set in Germany, or by German authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of "Saarbruecken" or "Germany".

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as next-up - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable".

===========

This is mostly self-directed, so whatever you guys as a team think fits the tasks will be fine.

However, if you do have questions or are unsure about something, please do not hesitate to contact the Travel Agent.

Charlotte | 79 comments Hi guys!
I'm really excited about this challenge! :D

I'm going to finish a book today but it would only fit for the spell-it-out.

Which task do we choose first?

message 6: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I'm excited to get started on this too. Looks like we need to choose a team name. I'm hoping one of you is very creative...sadly, I am not.

I can read for #7 if we choose tasks (or I'm sure I can find a book to meet another task). I'm also okay to go with the spell-it-out if we prefer that option.

message 7: by Christy (new)

Christy Roberts | 51 comments Let’s do Germany book. Spelling out Saarburken or whatever, will take 100 months.
What is hip and cool set in Germany? WWII seems an easy target?
Also, Team name?? I’ll think and post in a minute...
Tks
Christy from Atlanta

Christy Roberts | 51 comments All our names spell out:
CADiLLACS
What do y’all think?

Leslie Christy wrote: "All our names spell out:

That's pretty creative! I like it.

Do you know how the Detours work? Do we do those in addition to the Task we choose, or instead of?

message 10: by Charlotte (last edited Jan 04, 2020 12:42AM) (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Christy, do you mean the task 'Read books set in Germany, or by German authors' or do you mean the spell-it-out of GERMANY?
I have found 1 book on my TBR which is set in Germany
Conversational German Dialogues Over 100 German Conversations and Short Stories (Conversational German Dual Language Books) by Lingo Mastery
But I don't know if everyone can find a book that fits this task.
If not, we could do the spell-it-out of GERMANY? It's 7 letters, so if 7 people read a book, it's done :)

Ooh yes I like that name! Good job! :D

I think we can either choose to do the task in Saarbrücken OR to do the detour task instead.

And do you guys know how many people should complete the tasks? Do we ALL have to complete every task or only a certain number? I'm a bit confused.

message 11: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I was confused. I think if we choose the task or the spellout, we each have to read. The detours look like only 4 of the team have to read. I like your idea to spell-it-out with GERMANY.

message 12: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Ok thanks! Then I guess the spell-it-out option is better? What do you guys think?

Yes the detour is indeed at least 4 people.
But the more people read for the task, the more points we get I think.

message 13: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments For the spell-it-out we can apparently use a lot for the letters! That's useful :p
"Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name."

The book I'm reading now would work for E, R, M and A.
Terra (The Elements #2) by Tracy Korn
And the other book I'm about to start would at least work for R and A.
Cruel Crown (Red Queen, #0.1-0.2) by Victoria Aveyard

message 14: by Christy (new)

Christy Roberts | 51 comments Y’all are definitely helpful at figuring this out. We each reach one book in/about Germany or one book for the Letter in the word Germany. I thought it was we all read the same book and discuss together...
I’ll go pick a new book and we can figure out which letter to assign it.

message 15: by Christy (new)

Christy Roberts | 51 comments https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Floating in my Mother’s Palms by Ursula Hegi. Set in Germany, German author. Does that work?

message 16: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I checked out some of the other teams sites to see how they were tracking and have added a sheet here for us to use (assuming we are agreeing to the spell out). I hope this is okay.

Should we message the other readers who haven't checked in yet?

message 17: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Christy, your book works indeed for the spell-it-out of GERMANY. The character's last name starts with an M, so that fits.

Oh thanks Leslie! It's very useful.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe they didn't see the notification of the team. Do you want to message them or do you want me to do it?

message 18: by Sally (new)

Sally taylor (sallyjanet) | 26 comments I am excited for this challenge,,
I LOVE the name! Cadillacs,, you creative folks!
is anyone good at setting up spreadsheets.. I love them (using them,, but I do not know how to make them.. I should make that a resolution this year to learn! I think my library has free classes... (this is rambling Sally!!!) LOL
Spellouts are pretty easy for me... but everytime we have to pick which option to pick,, I am up for whatever the majority wants..

I read Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon which would work for M in Germany

message 19: by Sally (new)

Sally taylor (sallyjanet) | 26 comments I just ordered this https://www.amazon.com/Scratch-Travel...

from amazon,, it is a scratch off map of the world so I can mark where we go (I am glad to do spell outs,, but I am going to try to read a book from each country we go to also and then I can scratch it off on my new map!
The one I got came with a map of the US too,, but they are only like 5 or 6 bucks if you just get a world map,,,

message 20: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Sally wrote: "I just ordered this https://www.amazon.com/Scratch-Travel......"

That's awesome. I have one for when I start really travelling. Right now I can only scratch off Canada and USA ... I want more countries!!

I messaged Sally because we are on some other challenges together. I can message Desiree and Abigail if you want to do Lana and Amelia.

message 22: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Oohh I love scratch maps! I also have a similar one.

And Leslie, where do you still want to go in your life? Or just anywhere :p

Ok thanks, I'll message Lana and Amelia right away.

message 23: by Milly (new)

Milly (purpleglitterypinecone) I’m here!! I didn’t even know the team had been formed yet oops

message 24: by Milly (new)

Milly (purpleglitterypinecone) If we are doing the spell it out I can creat a spreadsheet to and give you all the link to keep track of it all, if you would like??

I want to see the world. We have started talking about planning our first big trip and we are waffling between Australia/New Zealand; Sweden/Norway/Denmark or Africa.

message 28: by Milly (new)

Milly (purpleglitterypinecone) For the spell it out do the letters have to be from the author or the book title??

Also I’ll create the spreadsheet soon, I’ve just got a book I need to finish.

Do we get extra points for doing both words?? I’m sure they won’t take too long if we can use the letters from titles and authors (if we each read around two books each).

message 29: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name."

I had added a tab to the tracking spreadsheet...maybe you could just amend that? I just "borrowed" one from one of the other teams.

message 30: by Milly (new)

Milly (purpleglitterypinecone) Do we get more points for doing both words??

Oh those are great places! I've been to Norway, Sweden and Denmark and especially Sweden is one of my favorite countries!
And New Zealand and Australia are also on my bucketlist. But it's so far! It's like the other side of the world for me.

message 32: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Amelia wrote: "Do we get more points for doing both words??"

I don't think we get more points.
I didn't see anyone else do that at least.

Everything is far for me. I'm on the West Coast of Canada. Sweden is definitely high up on the list! We're thinking we could go when the World Junior Hockey is hosted in Sweden in 2022. The downside is we would be there in winter. The upside is at least we'd be there!

message 34: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Yes, I can imagine! And Canada is a big country so it's more difficult to travel to new countries. You could see the provinces of Canada and the states of the USA as "countries", I would :p
I live in Belgium in Europe so if I drive for like an hour, I can be in the Netherlands or in France, and if I drive for 2-3 hours, I'm in Germany, Luxemburg or the UK lol.

Oh I'm actually going to the West Coast of Canada this summer for the first time! It's so beautiful there!

That's nice! But I think it will also be beautiful in winter. It will be a fantastic trip! :)

message 35: by Midniteillusion (new)

Midniteillusion | 36 comments Hi!
Sorry I’m late to the game, I didn’t realize our team had been formed yet.
I have a book I’m currently reading that will work for the spell it out. I could go with A or M or R.

I love traveling, so I’m excited to see where this challenge takes us.

message 36: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Completion Post

BOOK: Sweet Filthy Boy
AUTHOR: Christina Lauren
STOP: Saarbrücken, Germany
TASK: Spell-it-out of GERMANY
HOW IT FITS: MC, Ansel Guillaume, starts with "G"

message 37: by Lana (new)

Lana (grimmistel) | 22 comments Hi guys! I didn't realise this thread was formed. I've just finished Miecz przeznaczenia (Sword of Destiny) so I could go with G (MC - Geralt of Rivia) or A (author Andrzej Sapkowski). (I'm not sure whether I can go with M since that's the Polish title?)

message 38: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Hi!
Leslie already finished a book for the letter G.
And I'm reading for the letter A. It also fits for the letter R, but Desiree is already reading for A, R or M.
BUT I saw there's a character named Yennefer, so you could use it for Y! :D
(It doesn't have to be the name of the MC)

I'll put your book on the spreadsheet, and also the book of Desiree. If that's ok :)

message 39: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Now we only need a book for the letter N.

message 40: by Christy (new)

Christy Roberts | 51 comments I'm currently reading the Ministry of Special Needs by Nathan Englander. NNNNathan. Will that work? When I finish it I'm going to start the Germany book I already posted about.
How do we know when to go to the next destination?

message 41: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 79 comments Oh great!
But can we complete more letters? Or does every team member have to read a book for the letters? I don't know.

We have to stay at least 1 week at the destination and we can go to the next one when we finish the task (so all the letters in this case). But I think that we can also wait until all team members complete a book, so that we can get the last 10 points. (If I understand correctly)
