It is the 1950s and US Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have been sent to Shutter Island, home to a maximum security hospital/prison, when a patient, Rachel Solando, goes missing. It quickly becomes apparent that her escape is physically impossible and the staff are reluctant to assist the Marshals with their investigation. The missing patient has left clues which seem to suggest that there is an unidentified patient/prisoner on the island and Teddy is already aware of rumours that the doctors are performing experimental treatments on the inmates in the lighthouse located near the hospital. As Teddy and Chuck explore the hospital and the island Teddy's suspicions grow that everyone is lying to him and this even encompasses his new partner.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this book. The creepy island setting, the hospital for the criminally insane, the rumours about the function of the lighthouse plus a hurricane hitting the island is a great set up for a twisty psychological thriller. The major plot twist was unexpected for me as I haven't seen the film, hadn't even heard of it before actually, and that meant the ending was a little abrupt.
