Sign up for February is now open! It will remain open until January 31st with pairs being made February 1st. All picks must be made by the 8th or one of us will make them for you.

Themes:

Black history month - Choose a book about or written by someone of colour.

February 9: National stop bullying day and Read in the bathtub day - Pick a book that involves bullying or efforts to stop it. Or a book that involves reading in any way.

February 21: International mother language day - Pick a book that is written in a language other than English and translated. Or pick a book about another culture.

Rules:
Comment that you are IN before December 31st.
Give at least 3 recommendations (more is always better in my opinion) to your partner, at least 1 pick must fit a theme. (Bonus points if more do!)
Do your best to read one of the recs given to you and come back here and comment on it!

Remember, this is to introduce us all to new books and/or give us a push to read something we have been putting off.

Note, part of the fun of this challenge is finding books that fit the theme that you think your partner would enjoy. Please state why you are picking a book and make sure that at least ONE fits a theme.

Laura ☾ | 873 comments @Mackenzie - anything specific you're after?

@Heather - as usual - I'm open to any suggestions but if it's already on my TBR that'd be great hahahah

message 11: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments @Brittany - I don't have any requests, anything you suggest is more than welcome! If it happens to be on my tbr already then it's ten times better! The more books to choose from the better also!

@Sophie do you want anything in particular or should I know to avoid a certain genre?

message 12: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments @ Laura anything on my to be read list is fine.

@Brittany here are your picks. ( I'm sorry they don't have the pictures I'm not on my computer.

-Fangirl: the main character likes to read.

-The fault in our stars: both characters share a love of reading.

- 10 blind dates: seen this on your to be read list.

- Ruby red: This was an amazing book and it was also originally written in a different languaged.

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments For Laura:

Black history month: All American Boys by Jason Reynolds .. co authored by a black and a white author, it follows a black teen brutally assaulted by a white officer and the white teen who witnessed it. I read this after reading The Hate U Give and thought this one was so much more emotional and thought provoking. I know it's not on your TBR but it's so worth the read and is fast!

Bullying: Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire .. this series has so much inclusivity and touches on all sorts of different bullying and prejudice issues.

Characters who read: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell .. adorable story!
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman .. also on my TBR!

Translated: The Murmur of Bees by Sofía Segovia .. translated from Spanish, I haven't personally read it though it is high on my TBR for this year, but it has high ratings!

And then just because it is on your TBR and I really enjoyed it, Letters to the Lost (Letters to the Lost, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer !

message 14: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Mackenzie here are your picks:

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1) by Shelby Mahurin - for characters who read (and I absolutely loved this)

Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi - written by an author of colour and I enjoyed this a lot!

The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2) by R.F. Kuang - again I loved this - and this kind of fits the different culture prompt!

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore - bonus just because I really enjoyed it!

@Heather I think I'll go with The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman - I've been meaning to get around to this for a while!

message 15: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments @Laura it was picked for me in another challenge for Feb so I'm hoping to get it done soon as well. Hopefully we both enjoy it!

Sneha (lovegood19) | 258 comments What do you want to read, Heather?

message 17: by HeatherH (new)

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments I'm down for anything at all! Brownie points if it's already on my TBR but I'm open to new suggestions as well!

HeatherH (bkwrm85) | 802 comments Thanks!!

message 20: by sophie (new)

sophie (judesdagger) @Teodora

I'm open to anything really but i would prefer if the books were already on my TBR :))

@Sneha
What books are ones i should avoid?

message 21: by Teodora (new)

 Teodora | 359 comments @Sophie
So I have for you:

Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi - for black history month

The Hate U Give six-chapter sample by Angie Thomas - could very well go for black history month too but also for the national stop bullying day

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas - if you haven't read it already - the main character loves to read

The Last Wish (The Witcher, #0.5) by Andrzej Sapkowski - it is translated from Polish and if you love epic fantasy you might give this a try, the stories are really good!

And also because February is supposedly the month of love I've got some propositions for you:

- read the first book you see in your TBR that has the word "kiss" in the title

- To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han and the two other ones if you haven't read them, they're really cute

- The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass if you want a romance-based dystopia to try out

You have now all of these, feel free to experiment!

Hey Mackenzie

loved Fault in our Stars
and I red Ruby Red a couple months ago, thought it was alright enough that I will continue the series at some point.

So I put a hold on 10 Blind dates but its about a 15 week waitlist..... got any more for me?

Teodora here are your picks

Black history month - Choose a book about or written by someone of colour.

Dread Nation (Dread Nation, #1) by Justina Ireland not on your tbr and I haven't read it but heard good things. Fits the person of colour on both counts.
The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo from your tbr, looks really good and different.

Moth to a Flame by Ashley Antoinette not a young adult book. This book unsettled me. Its full of abuse and trying to leave your abuser. Definitely not a book for everyone, but is one that evokes all kinds of emotion. Fits both sides of the POC theme.

February 9: National stop bullying day and Read in the bathtub day - Pick a book that involves bullying or efforts to stop it. Or a book that involves reading in any way.

The Handmaid's Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1) by Margaret Atwood love this book, its on your tbr and definitely involves a type of bullying.

Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout not on your tbr, good ya paranormal series. The MC is a book blogger and loves to read.

February 21: International mother language day - Pick a book that is written in a language other than English and translated. Or pick a book about another culture.

Blood of Elves (The Witcher, #1) by Andrzej Sapkowski or wherever you are at in the Witcher series. Its big right now, I need to read it also. Translated from its original Polish

Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1) by Kerstin Gier not on your tbr, cute book though. Translated from its original German.

Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse Also from your tbr, I haven't read it but heard good things. About the Navajo people.

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty on your tbr, I don't know why you haven't read this yet, you should fix that. Fits the different culture aspect, set in Egypt to start with.

Just because:
Theodora Actress, Empress, Whore by Stella Duffy its on your tbr and I loved this book. It kind of fits under bullying as well as being of a different culture and time period.

I could absolutely come up with more, I only got part way through your tbr so if you want more choices let me know

message 24: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments @Brittany That's brilliant! If you still have something for me put them here, I love to have so many options!

message 25: by Mackenzie :) (new)

Mackenzie :) (book_girl_777) | 253 comments @ Laura I'm going to go with children of blood and bone. thank you for the suggestions!

@Brittany since you've already read those how about...

- If I'm Being Honest: this was an AMAZING book and I really enjoyed it. it goes with the bullying part of this month.

-Children of blood and bone: I'm also reading this one and it goes with coloured authors.

Bonus- R.I.P Eliza Hart: this was also a good book and deserves more people to read it with how good it was.

message 26: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) | 258 comments @Heather, this is mostly from your 'tbr-owned-books' tag.

-Wonder: It's the only book that's not on your tbr. It includes bullying. It's a middle-grade book and it's very good.

-Six Of Crows: I can't believe you haven't read this. It's my all-time favorite book. It's high fantasy and it's the best book ever!

-City Of Ghosts: Also a middle grade. It's very good.

- Pride And Prejudice: It's my favorite classic book. It's great.

-City Of Heavenly Fire: The best series I have ever read. I read this in 2 days. It's that good.

Helloo! Here are my picks for you :))

1.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
The main character is an author, and she reads something throughout the book, reading is very involved in the plot :)

2.
Lovely War by Julie Berry
One of the main characters is a POC! It's also one of my absolute favorite books :)

3.
Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1) by Kerstin Gier
I haven't actually read this myself so i don't have any comments about it but I know that the book was originally written in german :))

@Teodora, i'm looking forward to start reading one of the books you chose for me :))

Mackenzie thanks for adding some more options!

If I'm Being Honest sounds great sadly the library doesn't have an ebook copy so I will have to wait on that one.

I've put a hold on Children of Blood and Bone so I will try and get to that soonish!

Has anyone had a chance to start their books yet? What are you thinking about them?

message 33: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments I read the Bookish Life - I quite enjoyed it, but I wasn't as blown away as some of the hype around it

message 34: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Fair, sometimes the hype detracts from a book since you expect so much more from it

message 35: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) | 258 comments I started Verity by Colleen Hoover. I had a few exams so I could not read it much. I just don't want to put it down. It's so interesting!

message 36: by Teodora (new)

Teodora | 359 comments I started Dread Nation by Justina Ireland and I think it is going to be good because I am pretty excited about it and the premises sound really intriguing!
