Question: Do only fantasy and scifi books count towards the challenge? I read a lot of other genres too.
I'll join team Marvel.

It's not genre-restricted, so wether you read crime, contemporary or even non-fiction, if the book fits the criteria it counts.
As the challenges are tweaked towards super-heroes, there might be challenges that are very difficult, if you try to do them without using sff books.
But the only really strict rules are that graphic novels don't count, that the book has to be over 100 pages and has to be read during 2015.

Team DC please! Thanks MPauli - you're a legend!
Maybe as a bonus both teams could have the chance to recruit the MPauli character for extra points :D

Should probably start planning books now, but, I know I'll do the same as I am at the moment, and just reading whatever and hoping it fits ha.
Good luck, Team DC!
Much like 2014, 2015 will be a year of change for me and unfortunately I can't see myself keeping up! :( (look at my pitiful xmen avengers one!) I'm going to focus on the BOTMs in 2015 :)
Great plan though mpauli as it was a lot of fun trying to find books for this year's! :)

Sign me up for Team DC, please! :D
As I did Xmen this year, I think I will go for Team Marvel next year. Thanks for doing it again Mpauli your a star!

Some of the challenges so far sound pretty tough!
Quick question, do you have to read the BOTM in its month? Also can it be used towards a villain/hero trait too?
I'm hoping next year I'll be a bit better than I've been this year! This year was crazy (wedding and moving) however next year I'm excited to say I'm expecting a little new addition - so after May time I'm not sure how much reading I'll get done!!

The reception of some of the tougher questions with the viallains toward the end of the year was really good, so I thought I would be bold and mix in some of them into the recruitment section for this year as well. :)

That is a really good question and I should clarify that in the rules.
From my point of view this is a decision that should be in the hand of the player, so I don't see an issue with a botm counting for any trait challenge.
It might make for some interesting strategies, cause the number of possible energy cells is finite and I don't want to restrict player freedom too mch.
The intention behind it is of course to encourage players to read the botm and either way you would.

Congratulations, that's exciting! And imagine all the hours you're going to spend awake at night. These can be used for reading as well, if you organize it well. :P

Question re Dr. Strange, 1. Sorcerer Supreme
Read a book with a mage/wizard on the cover or where a mage/wizard is one of the main protagonists. --> would you count the characters from the Mistborn series as mages/wizards?

Yes, Allomancy is the prime magic-system in Mistborn, so I would count Allomancers as magicians.

Awesome, just wondered as they're never really referred to as such :) I shall save The Well of Ascension for next year then ;)

The content doesn't matter. If it's over 100 pages and not a graphic novel, it counts.

Okay, just wanted to make sure. Thanks. :)
I LOVE the "Hodor trouble, not teenagers and their feelings" comment. That was great. Nicely done.

For Green Arrow 3, does the person need to be a famous celebrity in the real world our would it work if they were a celebrity in their world?
Also, I think I asked this before but I don't see the answer, do BOTM need to be read in their month?
I know we don't decide on the captain until January, but we can do some preliminary work now. I'm volunteering for the DC team (but no worries, I won't be offended if someone else is picked). I'm offering my services because I'm a huge coimcs fan.
Roger wrote: "Also, I think I asked this before but I don't see the answer, do BOTM need to be read in their month?"
Oh, sorry, I had just answered the second part of the questions. The BotM only counts in the month when it is the BotM. Again, my point is to encourage reading and discussing the BotM within the month. But of course outside the month, you can read them and use them for other challenges.

After the rosters are filled now, the Joker is revealed as the first villain to welcome you into 2015. Can our heroes wipe that grin off his face?

Players are welcome to join in whenever they want during the year, as long as the event is running.
Rules:
-Each player decides, if he wants to compete for the DC or the Marvel team.
-DC players are trying to complete the DC roster challenge, Marvel players trying to complete the Marvel roster challenge.
-There are going to be 12 characters on each roster, each represented by 3 challenges based on that characters traits and powers.
-For each trait challenge you're able to complete, your team is awarded 1 point.
-If you manage to complete all three trait challenges you "recruit" that character completely, which is awarded with 3 additional points.
-With 12 characters and 3 trait challenges per character, you need to read 36 books for the maximum of 72 points from the recruitment part of the challenge.
-The books for the recruitment challenge can be read at any point during 2015.
-Each book can only count toward one trait challenge, so you can't complete multiple challenges by just reading one book, even if the book would technically qualify for more then one challenge.
-For a book to count, it should have at least 100 pages. Graphic Novels do not count for the challenge.
-In addition to the recruitment part, each month a supervillain will be revealed. Like the heroes, each villain will have 3 trait challenges.
For each completed challenge you're rewarded with 1 point, if you manage to "beat" the villain by completing all 3 related challenges, you're arwarded with an additional 3 points.
-Villains will only be active for one month each and you can't score from their challenges afterwards. But of course you can complete them for fun.
-Villains should be revealed 2-3 days before the end of the month, so you get a little bid of time ahead to think about potential books to beat them.
-IMPORTANT:The books required for the villain challenges have to be read completely within the timeframe the villain is active. A book started 2 days prior the villain goes active, can't be counted for the challenge.
-Beating each villain within the given amount of time would result in an additional maximum of 72 points you're able to earn for your team.
-IMPORTANT:To be able to keep up the score, it would great, if you could use a new post for each new book read, maybe like this: book link/character name/challenge name/number of challenges completed for that character
Example: Dune/Captain America/Shield Toss/2 of 3
Of course you can additionally use a huge post, where you can schedule your books for all the challenges.
And it would be extremely helpful, if you would write "x recruited" within the post you completed the final trait challenge for a hero, or "x defeated" respectively for beating a villain.
-NEW FEATURE FOR 2015: DIMENSIONAL PORTALS
Beast and Martian Manhunter are trying to recruit help for their teams and are trying to open portals to other comic universes to recruit heroes from their.
That means that we will have 6 additional heroes this year. But to be able to to score from them, they need to be brought through the portal by the teams.
How does that work? Every time a player reads one of the Dragons & Jetpacks Books of the Month, this book counts towards an "Energy Cell" counter for his team. After the counter (50 for the first portal) is filled the team can unlock 1 of the 6 outer-dimensional heroes. After the decision is made, the hero belongs either to the DC or Marvel team and can't be unlocked by the other side. When the second team opens a portal, they choose from the remaining 5 heroes.
-For the outer-dimensional heroes, only books count that are read after the time the hero was unlocked, so if a hero is unlocked in April, you can't use books read prior to that date.
Also, players who join a team during the year can only make books count for those outer-dimensional heroes after they've joined the challenge. This restriction only counts for these heroes, the normal roster can be recruited retrospectively by new players.
-After we see how fast the teams manage to open the first portal, the amount of Energy Cells needed to open the second portal might be adjusted to a lower or higher number.
-It is up to the players to decide when they read a botm, if they want to have it count towards a normal challenge or as an energy cell. Please include that information in your posts
-NEW FEATURE FOR 2015: TEAM CAPTAINS
Choosing the outer-dimensional heroes should be a team decision and lead to increased communication between the players of the teams.
However, each team should nominate a team captain during January, who presents the decision of his team, so I know which hero each team wants to recruit, when they get to it. This is more like a necessary technicality, but I think it is the easiest way to approach this.
-So, that's how you can play. I hope you're going to enjoy this challenge. :)
