Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I just finished The Gospel of Loki which was just on the mediocre side of good. It did intrigue me enough to ask the collective intelligence for recommendations on great books about Loki, knowing that "great" is a fairly subjective opinion.

Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman9
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series features Loki and other Norse gods

I'll be curious what others say. Anna and I looked through a ton of books back when we were trying to pick options for the Norse challenge and...it seems like the greatest trick Loki ever played was to get terrible billing lol. The blurbs we found were not persuasive, shall we say.

CBRetriever | 6117 comments he was the trickster, so you gotta figure he wouldn't get good press just like Coyote doesn't.

True true haha

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Thanks Jannik! That one seems more like a Norse story in general rather than one about Loki.

Leanne Walker (leannew) | 24 comments I read Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology recently. It's great and very Loki-heavy.

Arthur Chappell | 33 comments The Poetic Edda You could go right back to his roots

Melani | 145 comments IF you're willing to go YA/middlegrade Riordan's Magnus Chase chronicles feature Loki, and two characters are children of Loki.

I, strangely enough already own that one on audible. I bought it for my son, I suppose I had better listen to it now.

I like the idea of "Loki-forward" books. In fact I have decided that I will be describing books like wines until it no longer tickles me.

Then you definitely should! It's not exactly a comprehensive text on the subject, he's picked the best stories (and most of them include Loki, obvs) and he's tells them in a really fun way.

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments The only Loki book that sounded good to me back in 2018 when we were looking at the Norse books was Loki: Where Mischief Lies, and I've since lost interest. It's YA, but if you're interested in a younger Marvel Loki, then this will probably hit the spot. Mackenzie Lee writes fun historical queer YA.

Probably not what Hank is looking for, but maybe someone else will find this thread someday.

Ian Slater (yohanan) | 397 comments The science fiction writer Lester del Rey developed a very interesting version of Loki in his short (very short) novel, "The Day of the Giants" (1959), originally published in 1950 as the even shorter "When the World Tottered."

It is currently available in Kindle, but I'm not sure how good the text is -- Wildside is not always careful about things like that. https://www.amazon.com/Day-Giants-Les...

Goodreads is familiar with an old paperback edition, which does seem to have been properly copy-edited Day of the Giants

Del Rey's "rationalized" magic is ingenious, and a lot of fun, although it may be even more so if you are familiar with the "Unknown Worlds" school of fantasy from the early 1940s, of which it is something of an extension. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown...

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments Thanks Anna and Ian both great suggestions.

I would also check out Marvel's THOR comics, as Loki is a very important character in it. Not just the current book, but do a little research on the web...especially look for Walter Simonson's work.

It's kinda hard to give you an accurate answer on this one without being spoilery ^^

Depending on the age of your son that might be a really good idea. The language if a bit fast and loose. It is a great up timing of the Norse Myths though.

Dj | 2364 comments I have a few books that I have mostly just dipped into that have Loki in them.

First is Rick Riordan's Norse Myth series, which is a spin-off of the Percy Jackson series. It not only has Loki but features two of his children. One of whom he is the Father to and the other the Mother. I find them an enjoyable read, in some ways better than the Greek stuff since the Main Character isn't the Son of the big-name Gods.

Nope, not telling, if you want to know you'll have to read it. LOL

There is one called: Runed Runed (Asgard Awakening #1) by Kendall Grey

This book seems to start with Loki after the battle of Ragnarok. This is an interesting premise, but I haven't read much of it yet, my focus being elsewhere at the moment so I can't say how good I think it is.

There is also the: Wolves (I Bring the Fire, #1) by C. Gockel Wolves

In this series, it starts out with Loki trying to save his children from Odin's wrath. He ends up in Modern Day, and so far it is an intriguing read, but I have only finished about three chapters so I don't know how it is going to end up.

This are some of the books I grabbed due to curiosity more than intent, well except for the Riordan series. But they are Loki focused so they might serve your needs.
