Betsy | 3456 comments #63 - Hugh Williams?

Yes! Three cherries!

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Hugh Williams for sure. Co-author with his wife of 'The Grass is Greener' starring Kerr, Grant, Simmons, and Mitchum.

Stellar sleuthing

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
He was also in 'David Copperfield' and (every woman should know this) he was in 'Wuthering Heights'

message 755: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments I should have figured it out from 'Grass is Greener' earlier. Well, at least, we did it.

message 756: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
and of course, you admit you're not a fan of romance movies so maybe this is an extenuating circumstance

message 757: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments I did see 'Grass is Greener' because of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr so I was familiar with the story so I (finally) put 2+2 together. I'm not opposed to all romance in movies, if it's appropriate. I just don't like it in most war movies.

message 758: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
I see. The trail led from 'stage play' to 'movie with Kerr'; then figure out who the writer was.

You're not a fan of, 'A Farewell to Arms' then eh?

message 759: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments I have not seen it.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments Hooray, Betsy!!!! I just couldn't come up with it. Good job. I think we have now finished off the old pics......time for some new ones, Feliks.

Quiz #68

message 764: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments #68 - Frank Overton?

message 765: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments #66 certainly looks like Bonita Granville, but I doubt you'd use her.

message 766: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Yes, winnah on #68. Deft!

Frank Overton is one cool dude. Never realized how much famous stuff he appeared in. What a quintessential 'American' character he is. That dry, flat, dusty, unsentimental voice of his.

No to Bonita. Y'know, Miss Granville has been suggested as a 'mystery guest' in this quiz now, on more than just one occasion. Frankly, I have no especial interest in Bonita. She rarely figures in my thoughts. Take my word for it, she will never appear in this quizzo!

message 767: by Jill (last edited May 29, 2020 03:37PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments You got in ahead of me on Overton, Betsy. He really had a career, once again showing that you don't have to be a "star" to be successful.

#66 looks like Billie Burke but is probably too young.

message 768: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments I figured you would probably know Overton, Jill. He's a fairly well-known character actor.

#67 looks a bit familiar.

Above, I tried to sum up all the won challenges so far. By gobs, all the numbers are haywire. How'd that happen? Why didn't anyone alert me? Maybe I didn't number each challenge as I went along? It's too late to go back and change them now...

I didn't even notice it. Thanks for the new summary.

I would like to request that you put "American" or "British" on the new pictures if that is the country where they achieved fame.....it helps in the detective work if we don't recognize the person immediately. :>)

Alright. Currently #66, #67, #69 are all USA.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments That cowboy looks so familiar and I am trying to age him in my mind. There is something about his eyes that caught my interest.

message 777: by Betsy (last edited May 30, 2020 08:56AM) (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments It's a way out guess, but then it's hard to tell what she looks like. So many of the era look similar.

message 778: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Nope. p.s. I think it is safe to say that #66 and #69 were both mega-famous in their day. #66 in the 1940s and #69 in the 1920s. No doubt further pictures will make the shoe drop.

message 779: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments #69........Pola Negri

message 780: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
No to Negri. Good guess though.

And allow me to correct myself: #66 was mega-famous but it's better stated that #69 was considered one of the most beautiful silent stars. She was no bit-player but I can't quite claim she was as mega-famous as #66.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments Barbara La Marr?

message 784: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
That's certainly an excellent guess ...but falls just short of the mark!

message 785: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments I have a question. Did you send through 2 #69s? I have one listed as #69 but it is a man with the caption, 'This one is might-y easy.' Perhaps he's really #70? Just checking.

message 786: by Jill (last edited May 30, 2020 04:52PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3879 comments I don't have that picture of a man that says"This one is might-y easy", Betsy. What was the number of the message?

My next guess on #69 who is the vamp......Evelyn Brent.

message 787: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments This is weird but I have 2 Kindles and it came through only on one, late Friday evening but no message number??! Anyway, I'm willing to ignore it. I just wondered.

message 788: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Yes. You saw a-rightly. I made a mistake Friday evening; I posted a fresh #69 but I didn't realize he was Warren Hymer, a figure you already know very well.

No 'giveaways' in this quizzo!

message 789: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments Okay, no problem. Just wondered if I was seeing things.

message 790: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments Wild guess on #66 - Priscilla Lane?

message 791: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Nice try because I always admired Lane's looks and her comedienne skills.

But this particular blonde is more of a noted singer and dancer; she was groomed by MGM similarly to the manner of Rooney and Garland. Her idols growing up were Jeanette MacDonald and Clark Gable --both of whom she got to meet one day.

message 792: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments On message 786, are we to assume Jill's guess wasn't right? Just wanted to make sure. That is a tough one since they all seemed to favor black.

message 795: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (last edited May 31, 2020 07:32AM) (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
I had thought # 67 (young cowboy) was a bit more famous (with more movie roles to his name) but he is really quite obscure. TV roles primarily. Notable accomplishments; just one Golden Globe award for a support role in one decent film. There 's no way you would likely know him.

I think I will drop him. It's actor "Lee Kinsolving".
What I want to do instead is substitute this lad for slot #67. This is the actor who I thought "Lee Kinsolving" was.

message 796: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments He looks like a young Skip Homeier.

message 797: by Feliks, Co-Moderator (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
That's correct! Easy win eh? Skippy Homeier it is. I wanted him in this quiz because of his role in 'The Gunfighter' as the man who guns down Peck's Jimmy Ringo.
