Swift! She pounced on that one. Too easy, eh? I couldn't tell in advance; I only know 'ole Ted very passingly myself.

Yes! Deft nab! It is he. Look at that guy's filmography, its as long as an elephant's trunk.

He was also reporter Clark Gable's aggravated newspaper editor in "It Happened One Night"; that's how I came across him.

You have showed no mercy many times while we had to think for a couple of days before coming up with an answer. :>)

To think some of the early 'challenges' were easy picks like Jack Oakie and Hans Conreid. Feh! I didn't know what savvy lore-masters I was playing with...

Quiz #88. American. His career began prior to WW1. He has small but important roles in 3-4 very 'big' movies of the 40s.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3878 comments He looks like a cross between Somerset Maugham and Victor Moore!! One question.....would we know him more at this age or in his earlier years?

he had parts in exactly five *very big* very famous classic films between 1940 and 1944 --and this was his general appearance in all of them.

The *youngest* looking pic I can find of him is this:

Your best bet is probably to sift through the cast lists of the very biggest biggest biggest hits of the early 40s and see if you can spot him

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 3599 comments Mod
Losing my mind. Quiz #89's silent career: none. Nought. Nothing. I got my last two challenges mixed up.

Quiz # 89: His film career started very late in the classic era. 1939 he made his debut. He appears in 21 films between '39 and '44 of which five titles are very well-known to any classics fan. One of them (1942) was a multiple-category Oscar nominee, but the year prior (1941) he was in a flick arguably even more famous. However, the rest of his work were in series (similar to 'Andy Hardy').

Challenge #88 was in one of the major films of the great year of 1939 which was BP nominated.

Meanwhile #89, is as stated above.

message 1035: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3456 comments So the info in message 1033 refers to #89 only while message 1034 is about #88? Just want to clarify as I am a bit confused.

message #1033 refers to challenge #88. This actor had a vast, long career in silents and sound, including even some British titles, and then in the twilight of his career he makes scads of uncredited appearances in huge movies of the late 30s-early 40s one of which was a Best Picture nominee. His last role was in a Glenn Ford western.

message #1034 refers to challenge #89 who had a very short career mostly in serials --but he does have bit-parts in five BIG classics. One of these classics made in 1942 was nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture.

So the two actors each had wildly varying career lengths but each of them managed to get a tiny role in two well-known Oscar contenders.

a few of the flicks #88 and #89 appeared in, are some of the most beloved American productions of all time. They weren't stuff like stodgy Biblical epics, "Watch on the Rhine", or "Forever Amber"

Quiz #90! British and American both. Huge fame, both sides of the pond. Star of stage and screen. Seven silent films (among them some of the biggest) and twenty-one talkies. All genres. One of them a Hitchcock flick; one of them a John Ford flick. Star on the Hollywood walk. Mega-famous in her day; I don't quite know how to describe it.

What an impressive woman. That career of hers would choke a horse. And she stood tall physically, too--six foot!
