Betsy | 3455 comments Okay. Just one more thing I should have asked before--is the photo from that movie?

message 1752: by ClaraBelle (new)

ClaraBelle (elsiecorriedale) | 9 comments Was she in Robin Hood or Gone with the Wind?

message 1753: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Started my research last night. I keep having flashes of her face in a movie. How is it, Jill, being on the other side of the quiz? 😁

message 1754: by Jill (last edited Nov 12, 2020 09:23AM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments The photo is not from the film and frankly, doesn't look much like her. But I think if I put up one from the film, you would immediately know. And she is not particularly an ingenue type.

No, She was not in either of the films you mentioned, ClaraBelle

I don't have the resources that Feliks has but it is kinda' fun. This is such a great topic.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments Do you need any more clues or pictures?

message 1756: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments That would be great. I hated to ask so soon. Guess I'm out of practice on my research.

message 1757: by Jill (last edited Nov 13, 2020 10:59AM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments A clue: In her signature film, she played the sister of the main character and there were hints of incest between them. She was more of a co-star rather than a support player.

message 1758: by Doubledf99.99 (new)

Doubledf99.99 | 295 comments That's the way to take the ball and run with it Jill, way to go!

message 1759: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments It doesn't seem to be against the rules that Feliks has set up, so I thought I would give it a try, Doubled. We've had such fun in this particular topic.

message 1760: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Whoa, now that gives me something to think about!

message 1761: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Did you mention another picture? Have been going through 30s classics and zilch.

message 1762: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments I didn't mention another picture because I know that you know this actress from this film She made lots of films but if you Google her name, this is the first film that pops up as her classic role. Let me throw another clue at you. In the film, as well as being the leading character's sister, she is also George Raft's girlfriend. Does that help?

message 1763: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments This well known character actor was also in this film. Guess him and you get two for two.

message 1764: by Betsy (last edited Nov 14, 2020 05:43PM) (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Guess: Ann Dvorak? Is Osgood Perkins the guy? Poppy is kind of famous too since she was Charlotte Lucas in Pride and Prejudice.

message 1765: by Jill (last edited Nov 14, 2020 08:12PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments YOU GOT BOTH OF THEM!!!!!! I was sure you knew her but if I had put up her photo from Scarface, it would have been much too obvious. Did the George Raft clue help?

message 1766: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Yes, it did. You're right though about how different she looks in the posted photo. Do you know what movie that's from?

message 1767: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments I have no idea. But if I had put up this picture below from Scarface, I think it would have been a dead giveaway.

message 1768: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments Do you want to go next or do you want me to put up another one?

message 1769: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments I hate to admit this, but the 2nd picture didn't give me a clue. I didn't recognize her at all. 🤔

I'm afraid you're going to have to do another one unless someone else wants to because I have NO IDEA how to do it. 😥

message 1770: by Jill (last edited Nov 15, 2020 05:37PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments American actor in late silents through the late 40s. He played leading parts and then slipped into series films at the end of his career. To be honest, I didn't think he could act worth a darn.

message 1771: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Just a guess: Richard Barthelmess?

message 1772: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments No but a good guess. But Barthelmess could act and this guy couldn't although.....here comes a clue......he was in an Oscar winning film.

message 1773: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments How about Richard Dix?

message 1774: by Jill (last edited Nov 16, 2020 04:36PM) (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments How about......you are correct! I guess the public liked him since his career was long. He was nominated (but lost) as Best Actor in the film, Cimmaron altho' I'm not sure why he was nominated. And in romantic parts, it would be like kissing Broderick Crawford!

Let's see about this one.

American
Supporting actress who had a fine career from the early 1920s through the late 1940s.

message 1775: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments She usually played a tough moll.

message 1776: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Guess: Gladys George?

message 1777: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments Got it!! She really was kind of got stuck in the "cheap" woman roles in most of her pictures but it served her well through her career. She was very good in The Roaring Twenties with James Cagney and had the great last line in the film. It went something like this: Cagney is shot and dying on the steps of a church and Gladys is comforting him. The policeman says " Who is he.....is he somebody big?" She replies "He used to be". Roll credits.
Sadly, she died at age 50 and still had a career ahead of her. Good actress.

message 1778: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments I saw 'Roaring Twenties' many years ago so I don't remember much about it. May have to give it another look.

message 1779: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments This American character actor seemed to be in every film made in the 1930s. This is probably too easy since you have seen him many times.

message 1780: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Guess: George E. Stone?

message 1781: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments YES!!! That one was a little too easy since he was all over the place in the 30s and 40s. What a career he had

message 1782: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments You're right but he does look a tad different without his moustache. He was even a shifty character in 'Some Like It Hot.'

message 1783: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments That's why I picked a photo of him without his moustache but his face is just so unique that he is hard to miss.

message 1784: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments Try this one. He started in silents and made his reputation in one of the great silent extravagances. He didn't do much during the talkies and slipped from public view until his tragic death.

message 1785: by Betsy (last edited Nov 24, 2020 07:40AM) (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Hmm. Will do some research. So many Silent film actors look alike to me. 🤐

message 1786: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments He looks a lot like Ramon Novarro, but am not sure.

message 1787: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments You are correct. That one was a bit too obvious since we have mentioned him before, along with Ivor Novello. But I just couldn't resist.

message 1788: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments He looked somewhat different in that movie the other night. That woman who lied about him was a piece of work, and his father gave me the creeps.

message 1789: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments American actor who appeared in many films in the 30-40s, usually as a bad guy.

message 1790: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Wow, he looks like he's trying to decide whether to slit your throat or aerate you with a pistol.

message 1791: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments One of those slicked back hair guys!

message 1792: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Started my research, but maybe you could add another clue? Thanks.

message 1793: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments He appeared in at least two films based on the character of Ellery Queen.

message 1794: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Hmm, that's interesting. Have you read many of the Ellery Queen books or seen the films?

message 1795: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Guess on James Burke?

message 1796: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments I have read several Ellery Queen books and seen one of the films.
BTW, the man in the photo does not play Ellery Queen but is in a supporting role.

And no, it is not James Burke.

message 1797: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Guess: Jack LaRue?

I was going to say Tom Dugan, because he was in the Anna May Wong film, but he's Irish.

message 1798: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments Jack LaRue it is!!! He was in so many films that it was hard to come up with a clue. Did the Ellery Queen hint help you? He was in The Spanish Cape Mystery (1935 and A Desperate Chance for Ellery Queen (1942)

message 1799: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 3455 comments Ellery Queen was definitely a help. Speaking of Anna May Wong, is the Ellery Queen film she was in the one you've seen?

message 1800: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) | 3876 comments I don't remember seeing her in an Ellery Queen film. My favorite of hers is Picadilly.....a silent made in 1929. You might want to look on YouTube as it could be there. I have the DVD.
