I realize I sound very prudish and old school, but when I was majoring in Women's Studies bitch was still a very derogatory term! I wonder what my profs from that day think about it? It was still a new, cutting edge field back then and none of them had degrees in it it was so new.

Really interesting. I have a couple on my wishlist already.

Karin, I understand what you are saying and I think it is still a derogatory term. I think in this case it is an in your face use of it as when I think "Bitch? You wanna see bitch?"

I discovered Bitch back when I was in college and I think the point of calling it that, as well as what BNB mentioned above, is taking back the word to give it renewed power... I am not sure if I am explaining that correctly. Kinda in the same way "queer" was a derogatory slur but now some people choose to identify as queer to remove the negative connotation and take away its oppressive power. That's an oversimplification I am sure, but essentially by embracing that word it eliminates the power for oppressors to use it against you. If you self-identify as Bitch it's not longer a resource for oppression.

I feel like I just said the same thing 3 different ways because I don't know how to explain 🤣😜

Taking back = control the power the use of the word is intended to impart. Very recent examples: "Nasty Woman" and "pussy" during the 2016 presidential campaign.

That effort with the word "bitch" has been ongoing for some time.

The reverse happens too. 'Dope' is being turned into the equivalent of 'cool' 'trendy' 'hot'.
