Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Two hours to go for me. I am making do with a few Sherlock Holmes short stories by modern series writers. Ha ha ha. I just read one told from the horse's POV based on the original Silver Blaze story.

message 307: by Debra (last edited Jan 01, 2015 11:16AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm going to attempt finishing my first series today, although my eyes are not cooperating. Everything is blurry!

I'm reading Hot and Sweaty Rex which is book 3 in the Anonymous Rex 3-book series.

This series is a blast! What if dinosaurs survived and are living in our midst disguised as humans? Hmmmmm?

Happy New Year, everyone!

message 308: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Thanks to Travis in another thread, my mind is playing tricks with me on that title! I'm reading Hot and Sexy Sweating Sex Rex. Then when I looked at the book blurb, I read "What if the dinosaurs faked their own erection extinction?" I need an intervention.

You'll be finished your first series, but not your first level right? Good grief, I almost had a heart attack. Reporting thread not ready. Badges not ready!

message 309: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (magickrhythm) Hello! I'm new to this group :) How do we sign up for this challenge? I just started a new series as my New Year Start and I would like to include it.

Also: Do audio books count?

TIA, Amanda.

Too funny about the sexual innuendos derived from such an innocent (ok, not so innocent) title! Funny, but there is a sticker over part of the Rex part of the title on the book. If people at work see me reading this during my lunch hour they are going to be scandalized!

Won't I be finishing my first level? I will have completed the final book in a series which gives me 105 points. Or have I misunderstood?

Hi Amanda and welcome to the group. To "sign" up for this challenge, start your own thread in this folder. Name it something like "Amanda (Magickrhythm) Kills Series in 2015". The title is your choice - be as creative as you want. Reserve several of the messages (maybe 6) so that you can go back and edit them with your book lists. Take a peek at some of the others' threads so that you have an idea of how to set the thread up.

The reason I put your goodreads name behind Amanda is that we have other Amandas in the group and this helps identify you for when you earn badges. We will set up your wall of fame for the badges and need something to differentiate you from the other Amanadas.

Oh, and yes Audiobooks count. Check back to message 1 for the details and rules of the challenge. That might answer some of your questions. I know going through pages of this thread is cumbersome, but it may answer some of your questions.

Yes, you will be finishing your first level (already - you and the other two keeners). And, no, you haven't misunderstood.

Thank you for responding.

I have searched the thread for comments about series' that have books publishing later in the year. But, I would like further clarification:

I am currently reading Asylum (I started on 1/1/2015). Book 2 Sanctum is already published and Book 3 Catacomb is scheduled for release in August. If I wait until August (when Catacomb is published) to read Sanctum and then Catacomb, will this count as a complete series?

Also, since I started Asylum before finding/signing up for the challenge, I know that it does not count for points, but if I re-read it in August when the 3rd book is published, will I get the points then. (It was asked/answered that re-reads count.)

One more question on points (for clarification). I have planned to read The Burning Room in the next few weeks. Since this is book #19 in the Harry Bosch series, will this give me 105 points (100 for "completing" a 10+ book series plus 5 points for finishing the book)?

Most of the series I read are well into them and don't know if I will "start" any new series as I have hard enough time keeping track of the ones I do read! So, the point clarification and publishing criteria will help me to decide.

Thanks again!

Hmm.. Either i am missing some info, or i am totally confused (most likely it). The way i understood it, reading the last book of a 3 book series would earn 35 points.

message 316: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice, I am not sure you answered Debra's question correctly. If she finished the third book in a three book series she only has 35 points and she cannot be done with Level 1.

You said each level has to include finishing a series and have a minimum of 100 points.

I agree that she has killed a series, but not finished a level.

My 105 points and the completion of Level 1 were for finishing the last book of a 21 book series (as published so far and I had completed all the rest previous to Jan 1st).

100 points for a series of 10 or more books and 5 for the book. Right?

You will need to wait until the 3rd book is published before you can consider the trilogy for this challenge. Duologies don't count towards the challenge.

We only consider published books. If you finish a series (and count the points), and a new book is subsequently published, you may read the newly published book but you may not count the series again. You may count the 5 points for the new book.

If you haven't finished the series when a new book is published, you must read the new book before you can be considered as finishing the series.

Any book that has been finished or started before you begin a level doesn't get any points. If you re-read books, those will get points.

And yes, if you read book 19 of the Harry Bosch series and you have previously read the first 18, you will get 5 points for the book and 100 for the series to total 105 points.

This response is in answer to Esther's post, too.

Debra didn't specify what series she was talking about. You are assuming that she was referring to Anonymous Rex series. But, she may have been referring to some other series that has 10 or more books for which she only has 1 book left to read. That was my assumption. There is nothing on her thread other than reserved spaces.

If Debra is referring to Anonymous Rex and she has previously read the first 2 books, she will only have 35 points, and will need more books to bring her points up to 100 to complete the level.

If she is referring to another series that has 10 or more books, she will score 105 points after she reads the last book.

So, Debra - help us out here. LOL!

Perfect! Thank you, Janice, for answering my questions! I will wait to finish the Asylum books until the 3rd one is published so that I can count it! :) I've made my post, I hope I've done it correctly.

@Sandra: Thank you for the welcome! I am excited to try this new challenge out!

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I just finished going through my TBR list on Goodreads and putting all of the series in on FictFact... I just added about 100 new series on there that I want to start! I wonder if my TBR list will actually shrink this year instead of continue to grow despite moving books to the "read" shelf... doubt it!

message 322: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments And the thing with series is, if you find a new one, it's not just one extra book to your tbr, but at least 3!

message 327: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thank you, Janice for the clarification for Esther and me.

Debra, I hope you know I was not picking on you and trying to upset you. I would never do that.

message 328: by Debra (last edited Jan 03, 2015 06:08AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Oh no, I'm not upset. Just confused. I must have misread something, somewhere. I thought we got 100 points for finishing a series, regardless of how many books in a series. The rules are plain as day, now that I've reread them. I WILL be finishing a series that has over ten books, maybe that's why I had it in my head that I'd get 100 points for a series. Anyway, sorry for the confusion. I read a trilogy and only have 35 points!

message 329: by Debra (last edited Jan 03, 2015 05:51AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Actually, I know what happened! I was going to read the next book in the Pendergast series and THAT would have earned me 105 points. But the book isn't available yet, so I read the last Anonymous Rex book, which is only a trilogy. I think I need help with my fickle brain!

So, in your mind you were confusing two series and Cherie, Esther, and I were all confused along with you. ROFL! Cherie & Esther were thinking about the Anonymous Rex series, I was thinking about a 10+ book series unspecified, and you were combining them both in your mind.

Too funny! I'm glad we have it all sorted now.

I realized that I hadn't read as many books in my Level 1 Series as I thought. It's been so long since I started the Harry Bosch Series - the book blurbs don't ring a bell. Oh well...Just glad that I love the series.

Believe it is the same as usual. So challenges don't overlap (monthly and yearly) but topplers and group reads are fair game.

You can read your books in any order. Whatever series book you read gets points in the current level. When you finish the level, all points reset to zero. You start out the next level at zero, and any series books you read prior to level two are not available for point. That allows you to spread your series books out if you tend to burn out by reading them back to back.

You know where to find me if you remember the other question.

message 346: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments This has probably been answered somewhere but I wanted to check, to consider each level completed do we just need to hit 100 points or do we have to complete a series in that as well (I know we need both to consider the challenge complete)?

message 347: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jan 05, 2015 07:15AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments You need to complete at least one series and tally 100 points in each level.

message 349: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments I should have mentioned that you have completed the challenge if you complete one level. Your personal challenge will be the number of levels you complete.
