Hugh | 7 comments What's the name of that book? It's probably in a collection of science fiction shorts by mathematician/sf writer. Maybe Asimov, but I just can't find it.
Daughter searches for mother in notional Mandelbrot Lake... not going to add spoiler!

Spoilers are fine in a comment.

Hugh | 7 comments Thanks Lobstergirl. Yes, the story is inspired by the Mandelbrot set, which is a mathematical equation which can be graphically represented as a lake-like form. The writer creates a mindscape where estranged mother and daughter search for and find one another in the convolutions of this utterly complex fractal structure.
The beauty of the story is that instead of travel to another world this science fiction travels into another mind: that of the mathematician. A great leap for a non-mathematician such as myself.
I originally read this story more than thirty years ago. I would be delighted to be able ro read it again.

Hugh | 7 comments Fascinating database. Thanks Andy.
I haven't found the story in it that I'm looking for, but there's lots more here!

Andy | 2124 comments There is a novel with a scene something like what you're talking about - "The Ghost from the Grand Banks" by Arthur C. Clarke The Ghost From The Grand Banks

See the quote here https://books.google.com/books?id=UY8... for a scene at the Mandlebrot lake - I wonder if you read an excerpt of this book

Hugh | 7 comments Thanks Andy. I'll get a copy of this book. It does indeed describe the Mandelbrot Lake as I remember. Perhaps what I'm looking for is a part of this story, or a separate short story based on it.
