Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments Collette's turn this week and it's another round of hairy rock, this time with ex Deep Purple man, David Coverdale's Whitesnake. Amazingly enough, this year will be 40 years since I seen them for the first (and last) time.

Wiki says 13 albums to choose from, a few more than I had realised.

Nominations in by 10 om Sunday, provide a link to your chosen song, and any questions, I am sure Collette is on stand by.

Go shake those locks :-)

Collette | 6188 comments You know me, Spacepig. 'Hairy Rock' as you call it always gets top billing above everything else on my Mac or CD player. And if anyone does have any questions...tough! I'm away til Monday. 😈

A tough one, as Whitesnake terminates for me with the break up of the Moody/Marsden line-up. There's at least one song from that period represented here by a later remake with the American session men Dave took up with, so it doesn't get the points it would have got in its original version.

Collette | 6188 comments Apart from seeing T-Rextasy at Glasgow Pavilion a few times, I don't do concerts, Val. 50 odd quid for the cheapest tickets? No thanks. That would get me 5 brand new cds including change back, a full outfit from Primark, ASOS or Boohoo, or a really decent bottle of perfume.

After Tim. And top points go to HIGA '87. Much better than the original version.

This week's winner then, by 1 point, Brass Neck grabs it with Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City. In second place, the song that cemented the end of my relationship with this band, Here I Go Again '87, nommed by theDuke. Filling the podium, Tim with Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues.

It ended your relationship, Spacepig, but it also gained them a whole new generation of fans. The 1987 album has to be one of my top 10 favourite albums of all time. I totally love it.

message 27: by Spacepig (new)

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments Most definitely Collette. Like several other bands, (Scorpions and Def Leppard jump to mind, but there are plenty others) they changed their target audience from the long haired, denim wearing original fan base to the MTV, radio friendly masses, and made themselves a whole load more money in the process. The result being a very clear dividing line in their history.

But, and don't take this personally anyone, I have another observation to make from the comments in this round.

Collette said that she didn't do concerts, mainly I assume because of the cost, and the only exception, was to see a T Rex tribute band. Now, don't get me wrong but, don't we often hear complaints about venues having to close due to low attendances, or new bands not being given a chance, or there's never anything new these days? As a music enthusiast (as I assume most of us are) this disturbs me.

You don't have to pay £50 to see a gig, it's not as if Coverdale needs your hard earned, but why not fork out a fiver now and then to go and see some new original bands playing some grotty little dive, and support your local scene?

message 28: by Collette (new)

Collette | 6188 comments It isn't just the money, Spacepig. Amongst other things, I can't stand for too long or I feel faint. I had to get stretchered out of a GG concert back in 93. Totally embarassing. D's brother slagged me for years for that party piece. So I prefer to blast my CDs out and dance around the room. And I definitely don't do grotty dives.

message 29: by theDuke (last edited Feb 07, 2020 10:36AM) (new)

theDuke | 6496 comments I went to a grotty dive to see a band last year. I got completely rat ersed & a gained sore neck from headbanging away the night! It were really greet! :)

message 30: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22186 comments Unfortunately grotty little dives seem to be an endangered species, at least around here. As more and more people are gentrifying the inner suburbs, they don't like loud music, loud patrons, etc. I can appreciate that artists are more than happy to play an upmarket venue - more money, good acoustics and better backstage facilities - but I feel weird listening to rock/dance music in a concert hall. And don't get me going on arenas! I'd like to see the Hella Mega tour in November (Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer) but do I want to go to a football stadium - hell no! I am going to see Bon Iver for the third time in June. Previously in small venues, this time he's at the Tennis Centre (seating 11000) - why? We've still got some quite good smaller venues but they are now out in the suburbs and not always good for public transport. The one good thing about getting older is that the lovely young folk who run these venues are usually happy to provide a chair when asked!

message 31: by Spacepig (new)

Spacepig Pig | 1473 comments I love our dive bars. We have loads of them here and I think I have been stretchered out of most of them at some point.

Tonight for example, I have the choice between: 5 black and thrash metal bands playing in Freds, a punk night (3 bands I think) in the Poor Relation, or, to celebrate their addition to the Arc Tangent festival in Bristol this year, young Cork post rock sensations, God Alone in An Spailpan Fanach. My intention last night was to go and see Crow Black Chicken in the diviest dive bar of them all, Charlies. But, the weather was crap, the fire was roaring, I had had a very successful day scooping up CDs from a local charity shop window sale (an old man had died and the family had donated his music collection, mostly blues) and I was stoned, so I never made it.

We have a small, but very vibrant underground scene in Ireland, but this year a good number of our bands have secured either tours, or spots on the European festival circuit. Without these dive bars, these bands would never have got the chance to go on these tours, no one would ever have heard of them, and you, my European (and British) friends can also be the beneficiaries of this, if you would just get up off your butt and go see them in your own dive bars when they hit town :-)
