This is a novel in which people from the normal modern world discover a magical world. I read it sometime in the late eighties or early nineties, not sure when published. Seems like it fits in with most fantasy novels at that time; secret world hidden in plain sight.
The main “chosen one” character is actually a lower functioning woman. She has a friend who is a musician, viewed as a bard by the magic world. Her therapist is part of it as well.
I don’t recall much, a few scenes that stand out:
The main character, the mentally challenged woman, comes on the the musician, and he rejects her advances thinking she isn’t able to understand what she is asking for. He finds out from her and her therapist (later on) that she is aware and empowered, despite being low functioning in other area. Nothing romantic happens between them.
The ending involves some passage through a portal. The musician can’t enter because “bards never can,” or something.
