For epic battle, does it actually have to say epic battle in the book, or a scene of an epic battle?For grouch, does the character have to be called a grouch in the book?

The character is explaining how him and his men were paid to kill a group of soldiers, friends of the person he's speaking to."It was not arbitrary, the killing. It was no massacre of the innocent. It doesn't have to necessarily say epic battle. The scene itself would work.
Also grouch could be grumpy or anything similar.
