(p. 37) When I was reading, I was in the 87th Precinct with the detectives, not in South Dakota, mourning in a trailer house.
(p. 93) She studies the map for a few minutes, and then walks back to the car, gets in, and says, "Okay. Drive."
(p. 5) I sit down next to Whit as he pours a layer of ground mica on the floor. The firelight reflects it, making it sparkle.
(loc. 1240) "You take care of everybody. You always have. It was kittens and baby birds that fell out of the nest in the big tree in the backyard when you were growing up, and now it's everyone around you."
(loc. 582) ...and the look she gave him made him feel like a thief, like he'd stolen something from her, something personal and very important...
(p. 142) He'd furnished the house comfortably with garage-sale finds and bookcases filled eclectically with everything from scientific texts to worn paperbacks...
(p. 236) The transition was hard to appreciate, especially when Hux had to strap on snowshoes to go anywhere but the outhouse or the woodpile.
(p. 17) Eveline spent the winter of her pregnancy reading Emil's taxidermy manuals, the only bound pages for mile after boundless mile.
(p. 151) "It was not arbitrary, the killing. It was no massacre of the innocent. We are men. We do men's work. We were paid well to do as we did by an old and powerful enemy of his."
(p. 288) His stethoscope swung like pendulum.
(p. 24) ...she giggled, and when he saw why she was laughing, he flushed as red as the valentine she had taped to the wall above her bed.
(loc. 3934) "But she could get a transplant, couldn't she?" Sam asked.
(p. 285) After the pots and pans, he moved on to the container of oatmeal on the counter, then the cornmeal, which he emptied on the floor.
(p. 13) ...if he had not believed the ninth graders who assured him that his tongue wouldn't stick to the flagpole on a bitterly cold winter day, as long as he said the magic word first.
(p. 294) He could see himself opening some beans and eating them out of the can, hearing the fork scrape against the tin...
(p. 17) He pulled her closer to him and wrapped his arm around her. "Do you like this? It's called cuddling."
(loc. 1872) A warm tear slid down my face and onto the grave where it cooled into a tiny puddle against my cheek.
(loc. 2715) "Five- card draw." Adam shuffled the deck like a pro. "And he had more than a hell of a day," he said, tossing a look at Brady as he dealt, taking Lilah's ten bucks and handing her a stack of chips.
(p. 130) My New Year's resolutions tend to go the same route.
(p. 305) "A museum in Wisconsin asked me to bring a badger back to life for an exhibit."
(loc. 1452) Was he really such a bear? So scary and snarly? Was this what he'd become? A grumpy old man at thirty-two.
(p. 129) She goes all out on the flashlights, buying three jumbo ones along with a mountain of batteries.
(p. 272) Nelia Zafion stopped by with a greeting card that had an illusion of seagulls flying over a crucifix.
(p. 117) "Sometimes I sit at the bar and order nachos and watch people bowl."
(p. 196) Naamah has lost a tooth in the holy bread. I know she did it on purpose.
(p. 202) Hux said he didn't mind and went back to his beer and the bowl of peanuts the bartender set in front of him.
(loc 1225) A tiny wooden table sat next to that with some tools--pliers, box cutters, nails, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, etcetera...
(p. 231) Gunther and Naamah were married on a Tuesday at the courthouse in Yellow Falls, with Hux and Phee looking on as witnesses.
(loc. 901) "I've practically been living like a nun since my divorce three years ago," she said.
(p. 231) "Aunt Val took her place." Making the very same sacrifice for her daughter that my mother had made for me.
(p. 84) Everyone else's paths were decided for them, and nothing could be done about it. Eveline was pregnant. Again.
(loc3508) "At Christmas. Easter. Memorial Day. Fourth of July. Labor Day. Thanksgiving. Christmas again. Rachel's family loves to celebrate."
(p. 71) Considering she's a teenage girl, my first thought is shopping.
(p.67) ...Donna Claybrook sat polishing what looked like an athletic trophy, buffing at it with steady mechanical movements.
(p. 305) "Your dad loves you so much it makes him crazy sometimes," Uncle Hux said. "Sometimes?" Racina asked. "He won't even let me sweep."
(p. 41) "I'm doing Marge McCormick's wash. She's got a bug of some kind and can barely move today."
(p. 146) ...stocking cap pulled low on his forehead, muffler pulled up high on his neck, dark curls stuck damply to his forehead as he wound up a snowball pitch.
(p. 8) ..then pulled out the blue cigar box she used to hold her money, her tarot cards that she kept wrapped in a black silk scarf...
(loc. 3718) My family would still be here, my friends would still love me and my business would still be the award-winning empire that it was.
(p. 103) With his small band of warriors, each of them carefully picked, he routed Fogull's forces... Fogall himself he pursued to the very edge of the cliffs and fought there man-to-man. Soon enough Fogall, completely outclassed, fell to his death on the stones far below.
Bonus::
(loc. 2049) "What could the Mistletoe--the rootless Mistletoe--do against Baldur?"
(loc. 1827) Even though it was late, they built up a fire in the fireplace.
(p. 182) ...the chieftains of many clains were summoned to Tara by the high king, and Fionn would go as his father's representative.
(p. 134) "I never thought I'd hear you make the case against Romeo and Juliet," he said.
"They would have broke up if they'd lived for the sequel."
(loc. 2113) "A fancy dress costume. Your birthday event is a costume party, remember?"
(p. 243) "Come back inside," she said, with the kind of wild animal panic he saw in her the day he brought her back from the logging camp. "I didn't mean it."
(p. 162) Mom got a couple of rakes from the storage room and gave one to me.
(p. 163) Heath is famously snowed in for the winter months, making approach by snowmobile extremely difficult.

For grouch, does the character have to be called a grouch in the book?

"It was not arbitrary, the killing. It was no massacre of the innocent. We are men. We do men's work. You might ask this Eamonn of yours how many he has slain in like fashion. We were paid well to do as we did by an old and powerful enemy of his."

•You may use a book to fulfill multiple items (you do not have to read 50 books for this challenge...do not worry!)
•When you find one of the items, list the Book Title and Author (or link the cover), date it, & rate it. Then specify where the item is found within the book. For audiobooks try to put the chapter if possible. If not, then at least let us know you got it from an audiobook.

I'm looking specifically for chips, but if they ever mention throwing in an ante or anything like that we could assume they are using chips. What is the context?

Batteries: I will accept battery for batteries as long as it's talking about the object that powers things and not something like assault and battery.
Transplant: I'm looking for more like an organ transplant, but if you have a character that is a transplant from another city or country and they use that phrase, I'll accept that.

As far as Screwdriver....well either I guess. I had thought the tool, but since I wasn't specific and forgot about the drink, I'll agree to either.
So basically yes to all of that. lol

I hate when that happens. I'm sure I'll find that somewhere too since I was looking for it last round.

Sadly it does need to be a part of the story and not a part of the author's notes or acknowledgments or if there is an excerpt of the next book.
Sorry.

I just had the same problem. Snowmobiles, but no snowshoes. and then another book with lots of snow and again no snowshoes. Come on people!!!
Sorry Marla.

Why aren't people wearing sensible shoes??

HA! Funny you say that cause in the book with the snowmobiles, the girl is wearing high heels on a date and he asks her why. They live in Montana, she's used to the slick sidewalks, so it doesn't bother her. And in the end, he carries her to car, so she wins.
I, on the other hand, do not cause there were no snowshoes. lol
