Does anyone have tips on reading faster? I've seen people on Goodreads read over 100 books in a year, and I'd love to be able to do that, but I've never gotten there.

I skim boring books. I abandon bad books fairly quickly.

You can photo read or, like Wsm said, skim over the book jumping the parts that are uninteresting to you.

On the other hand, people read a novella (100-150 pages long) in half a day; others read a 1800 page book in several months; both count as one book. It also depends on the complexity and length of the book; don't let number of books mislead you.

The other thing to consider is what is your purpose in reading? Do you enjoy what you read? Do you remember it when you're done? Are you with the book to appreciate it in all it's aspects, language, style, the way the story makes you feel? Or you just want to find out what happened and then move on? Both are valid ways to read, one just has to choose what is more satisfying for oneself.

Agree with Roxanna, that rapid consumption of lit should hardly be a purpose per se. Maybe for scientific or other 'mandatory' reading, but for fiction the tempo should first of all bring enjoyment and avail relishing the "taste"

I agree, Nik. If I'm reading for information, I'll skim to the parts that I find relevant. But if I'm reading a good novel for enjoyment, I want to taste the novel and relish in the language, plot, characters, setting. That takes time.
