Rogan (keiratatec) | 8 comments Anyone got any ideas for a classic romance?

message 104: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Have you read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier? Classic, romance and eerie! Reads pretty fast.

message 105: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) If you look back over this thread and search romance using Ctrl+f, you can see what those who have shared have picked for that category. If you haven't read Jane Austen, any of hers work and are good. I've read them all so I'm doing Age of Innocence.

Andrew-
Great to have you along. This challenge runs Jan-Dec 2015 so you can use anything you've read during the year.

Rogan-
I think you have a bit of leeway with classic romance. There are classics that happen to have some romance (Austen, Bronte, some Gaskell, Lorna Doone, etc.) And then there's classics of the genre (duMaurier's Rebecca, Gone With The Wind, Gabaldon's Outlander, Winsor's Forever Amber, etc.)

Sorry I can't link for you. I'm on my phone.

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) I take it we are interpreting "a book with non-human characters" as a book that INCLUDES such, and not necessarily that consists of no humans at all?

message 114: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments It's definitely up to you on how you feel to interpret, but my interpretation was a book where the plot centers around non-human main characters (kind of like Charlotte's Web or Animal Farm). I think others interpreted it more as you suggest where it just includes non-human characters.

message 119: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments Nice. I'm down to 4 myself, but I'll admit, I'm dreading one or two of the ones I have left. A book your mom loves especially! My mom does not read much, but what she does read is completely not in my element.

Yes, my last three will be my toughest, one is over 500 pages and I've been dawdling over this one for about 5 months now. The other two I've picked out are wild cards. We'll see...

Good luck, Chase with your last four!

message 121: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 384 comments Good luck on that over 500 pages. I dreaded that one. I got lucky because someone wanted to buddy read The Mysteries of Udolpho. Buddy reading made it easier to read a 600 page book.

message 122: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Don't hesitate to ask for suggestions here. The lingering categories tend to be the ones for which we have little affinity.

message 123: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) A Little Life was VERY good. Way over 500 pages, though. Life after Life is also excellent, and closer to the 500 page mark. If you want to dip into some oldies, Lonesome Dove is the greatest. Other favorites (although nobody asked haha):

A Suitable Boy, but it's huge at around 1500 pages
Gone with the Wind of course
Hawaii and/or Centennial by Michener
Roots
Thornbirds
Helter Skelter
Bonfire of the Vanities
Sophie's Choice
Let the Right One In
Clan of the Cave Bear
Hypnotist by Linna

message 124: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Chase, maybe see if your mom can recommend a very short one? My mom doesn't read much, either, but she did read and love TKAM luckily for me, and I listened to the Sissy Spacek audio this year.

Well, initially I was going to post my progress in decats, but there was always one category in each group of ten that I hadn't gotten to yet so that didn't happen... And now it's November! And I'm 5 books away from completing all 50 books in the 50 Book Challenge. Yikes! So I'm posting the lot and then I need to get reading!

1. > 500 pages: One Hundred Years of Solitude**
2. A classic Romance: Under the Greenwood Tree**
3. Movie Book: Atonement**
4. A book published this year: The Rosie Effect**
