Christien Dugas | 9 comments Just curious how long everyone waits after finishing a book, before you start a new one.

Do you wait a day?
Do you instantly start a new book afterwards?

I find with series it’s easy to start right away, but does anyone find they get mixed up with characters when it’s close together for stand-alone books?

message 2: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leigholive) | 46 comments Depends how I feel. Normally I wait a few hours. Sometimes I wait a day. If it’s a series and I’m invested and have the books then I would probably still wait a little to start just to not overwhelm myself - haha.

message 3: by Heather (new)

Heather | 3 comments I immediately always have a book lined up it seems. I will say though if I have an exceptionally empackful book I might wait a day or so to let it process. I have been reading 2-3 books at a time lately but they are all different genres or I’d definitely get confused on characters.

Erin Sharp (armchairadventuresabound) | 7 comments Finished a book late last night, and started a new one early this morning :) It really depends on the emotional impact of the book I've just finished though. Took 2 months to get passed The Handmaid's Tale XD other times, I'll drop one book and pick up another within seconds.

Suzie (askingsleeping) I´d say it really depends. Sometimes (like now) I´m reading more books at once, so I won´t pick a new one if I´m done with one (from three books will be onle two). But if I´m reading just one, normaly I pick new one right after. Only when the book is "hard to process" I have a break for 2-3 days.

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine | 31 comments It all depends on the book I finish. Sometimes if I loved the book so much I go through a "bookhangover" but it usually last a day. If the book was DNF or wasn't as good as I hoped I can pick up a book the same day.

message 8: by Sam (new)

Sam I feel like with typical books I just start a new one if I've got one around or withing a day or two I'll get a new one to read. With Audible I usually have one lined up for me but it'll take me a day or so to invest in starting it because I use it for my commute to work.

message 9: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 7 comments It depends on if I still feel like reading when I finish a book... I just finished Salem's Lot, and I'm already looking at my shelves, but for something a tad lighter...

If it's a weekend afternoon, chances are I'm looking at my shelves for my next fix... After midnight? Probably just going to sleep, but debating the next read in my head before I fall off...

Emma ( Mrsbreads ) | 8 comments I always start another one straight away

message 11: by Charlene (new)

Charlene (bookishlychar) | 34 comments If it’s a series I will read one after another. If it isn’t I will wait until the next day. I try to ready varying genres in a row, it helps with not mixing up characters.

message 12: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (booknook43) I generally start a book right away after finishing, especially with my never ending TBR list. I'm such a mood-reading though so it just depends on what I'm feeling to read next. I generally pick out my next book about halfway through my current read. If I don't read the next book in the series, I generally just brush up on what I don't remember but generally it's just one different book in-between.

message 13: by Alex (new)

Alex | 6 comments I think it depends on how much I liked the book I just read. If I didn't like it I can jump into another book no problem, but if it was really good I need some time to adjust. I just want to live in that world and the ending for a while before jumping into another story.

message 14: by Cendaquenta (new)

Cendaquenta I often wait till the next midnight, but at minimum, probably a couple of hours. Have to let the previous one settle first, like after a good meal.

This Kooky Wildflower Loves a Little Tea and Books (alittleteaandbooks) | 43 comments Depends on how I feel and time of day. If I finished a book in the morning, I'll probably start a new one that afternoon or evening.

Whereas, if I finish later in the day, I'll start the next morning/afternoon.

message 16: by Jenna (new)

Jenna I have to wait a day between books regardless of how I felt about it. Once I finish a book I still linger on it emotionally and so when I try to pick up another book on the same day I finished the last one, I'm still thinking about that just finished book and so end up skimming the new one and not retaining any information. The just finished book gets the rest of the day to be thought of and appreciated ^-^

message 17: by Jalayne (new)

Jalayne | 4 comments I usually will have some books in mind that I'd like to read next. For me it is all based on how long the book that I just finished was. For instance, I may read a short physical book if I've just finished an audiobook. If I've read a really long book, like Outlander, then I might get into a reading slump.
I usually wait at least a few hours, if not a day, to begin another book. I need to give my brain some time to chill and reflect on the book as a whole if I've decided to review it.

message 18: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (capricas) I get distracted easily, and as such, I'm usually reading three or four books at any given time. The reading never ends!

message 19: by Kim (new)

Kim Kantor (kimkantor) | 37 comments I usually have a couple “real” books going, as well as one on kindle/Nook and one audiobook. Maybe two audio if one is an edge-of-your-seat book. I listen when driving and also when going to bed. Too exciting and I can’t go to sleep! 😴

message 20: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) | 14 comments Usually the next day

message 21: by Rina (new)

Rina (rina_p) | 35 comments Right away. I always read 3-5 books at a time, so there isn't much 'in between' time for me.

message 22: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (50_pages_in) | 19 comments I usually go a day depending on how good the book was. If it was really good and sticks with me, 2 -3 days until my book hangover is finished.

message 23: by Steffi (new)

Steffi (stx__i) | 8 comments I like to participate in readathons every month so I usually make a list the month before and allocate books that match the prompts and sometimes I have a specific time when I have to finish specific books so I usually just knock them out ASAP so I read books back to back!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2 comments I usually start immediately, unless I'm in a reading slump :) I don't really like the feeling of not having something to read, unless I've read a LOT and just need/want time to float around with all the choices in the world before I pick the next book. :)

message 25: by Annamae (new)

Annamae | 9 comments I am reading several books at one time in a variety of forms. So I am never really done. I read ARC's of Ebooks, have audiobooks for chores and at work. Print books for close to bedtime.

message 26: by Chelice (new)

Chelice Rogers | 28 comments I go through stages mostly but I pretty much always start a new book right away for the most part.

message 27: by D (new)

D | 3 comments I don't wait at all - in fact I often have 3-5 books going at the same time. If I'm working a lot it's normally only 1-2 books at a time.

message 28: by Annie (new)

Annie LaVerdure - Weller (princessanniepdx) | 2 comments I’m reading several books and also listening to Audible books at the same time. I am in 3 different book clubs on Goodreads. One is a True Crime and other is Classics and book we should have or did read when we were in school. For example Count of Monte Cristo, Immortal Life of Heniretta Lacks, and Little Women have been past books.

I grew up very poor and didn’t go to the greatest schools but I read a lot. Some of these books I have read but most I did not. My husband is always in shock when I tell him I didn’t read a certain book because he had to read it in middle or high school for a class. Unfortunately kids that grow up in poor school districts or rural environments did not get access to books or great literature reads.

I’ve always loved books. It took me away as a child to a safe and different place that I could hide away. Also books pushed me to get a higher education and to become the strong and independent Native American woman I am today.
