Deb Jones (feisty56) | 5 comments Hello, Deb here, fellow English mystery buff -- really mysteries of any country of origin, but there is something special about an English mystery, isn't there?

I cut my adult mystery-reading teeth on Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, lo those many decades ago. Looking forward to discovering new authors/books/series here and the camaraderie of like-minded book lovers.

Hi Deb, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club"! It sounds as if if you're in exactly the right place :) I think English mysteries are the best ... but then I'm a bit biased! And like you, I began with Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They were the first two authors I took out of the "grown-ups" library, when I was old enough to be allowed in :)

I hope you have fun here!

Steve Haywood | 12 comments Hi, I'm Steve from the a small historic city in the North West of England. I've lurked on here for now and enjoyed reading some of the discussions but not posted until now. I like reading most types of books, but favourite genres are crime/thrillers and also SF & Fantasy. I look forward to joining in some discussions on here.

I haven't read Nancy Drew either - growing up I was into the Hardy Boys and Alfred Hitchcock's The Three Investigators instead.

Hi Steve! Welcome to the "English Mysteries Club" - it's lovely to se you here :) I'm not sure whether I was aware of you "lurking", but I'm glad you've come out of the shadows. You'll find quite a few friends you know already - and also quite a few who are true experts in the genre (and some who are both, of course ...)

I hope you enjoy it here!

Kim Krisco | 1 comments Hello Jean et al,
My name is Kim Krisco and I'm so pleased to have stumbled upon your book group. I am an author that specifically writes in this genre -- mystery-suspense stories that take place in post WWI England. I began by writing Sherlock Holmes pastiches but have since gravitated to new female protagonist (Tessa Wiggins) who is a friend of Sherlock Holmes. I hope to gain greater insights into this genre and what people in this niche love most. My latest novel (coming out in a few weeks) is set in 1920 Wales and is semi-historical, as are all my stories. Cheers!

Hi Kim, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". It sounds as though what we read here is right up your street :) We even have an ongoing buddy read of all the Sherlock Holmes books, (and Miss Marple books) as well as our monthly reads

Please join in wherever you like, and enjoy the discussions. I hope our readers will be able to introduce you to a few English mystery authors who you may not have heard of.

I hope reading and contributing here helps you gain the insights your mention. We do have several writers here, even though we are a reading group. Good luck!

Helen (helennn) | 36 comments Hello everyone, I’m Helen, semi-retired psychologist and teacher in rural Australia. I just found this group, although I’ve been part of the Cozy Mystery Corner on Goodreads for several years.
I learnt to read with Enid Blyton, then progressed to Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and many others.
Current favourite authors include Louise Penny, Donna Leon, Kerry Greenwood and Diana Xarissa.

Claire (cgsapphire) Hi all! I'm Claire and I'm a newly retired elementary school librarian from Ontario, Canada. I grew up reading my mom's Agatha Christie novels and watching Masterpiece Mystery with her on Sunday evenings (still watching!). I am an avid English mystery reader, both contemporary and classic. While I read in many different genres this is by far my favourite. There are too many fantastic authors in they mystery genre to list all so here are a few of my favourties; Louise Penny, Dorothy L. Sayers, Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson, Ann Cleeves, P.D James... I am looking forward to exploring new titles and authors and revisiting/discussing some old favourites.

LISA Glass | 16 comments Welcome Claire! I also grew up reading Agatha Christie and I still love Masterpiece Mystery as well! I hope you enjoy this group!

Linda (cozymysteries) I'm so excited to find out about this group! I found out about the group through Elise Stone's newsletter. I'm a retired paralegal living in Lufkin, Texas. I enjoy cozy mysteries, especially those set in Great Britain. Nancy Atherton is my favorite cozy mystery author. I also enjoy reading Agatha Christie's books, especially those with Hercule Poirot as the detective. I'm looking forward to the discussions in the group.

Miriam Hello everybody, I'm Miriam from Italy and I love reading (and writing!) mysteries, especially if set in the past.
I love all the classics, but at the moment I'm reading on my own all Louise Penny's books.
I hope to enjoy reading with you.

Welcome Miriam. My wife and I also are reading Louise Penny's books. Two years ago we visited the part of Quebec where the books take place. We were looking for covered bridges. Here is a link to my travelogue if you are interested: http://www.vermontbridges.org/keating...
I have read the 1st 6 books in the series and posted reviews of each on GR.

Alan | 1 comments Hello friends, my name is Alan. I live in northern Mississippi, USA, and have read all of the Sherlock Holmes series twice, at least. In addition to having read nearly all of Sir Arthur Canon Doyle's works, I am now venturing into Agatha Christie novels.

Glad to find others who are interested in British mysteries!

Lovely to be a part of this group! :)

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 10 comments Else, welcome from California! I've been reading the Mitford Sisters' historical mystery series, too. A very interesting family, definitely LOL. Next one in the series comes out January 18: The Mitford Vanishing (Mitford Murders, #5) by Jessica Fellowes .

message 487: by Robert (new)

Robert Crouch Hi, I’m Rob and I live on the south coast of East Sussex, England. I love murder mysteries, old and new. There’s nothing like a complex whodunit, especially when the author manages to wrong foot you with a surprise or two.

My love of mysteries began with Enid Blyton’s Famous Five and Secret Seven, progressed to Conan-Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie, and now includes contemporary authors like Ann Cleeves, Elly Griffiths, and Faith Martin, to name but three.

I look forward to getting to know you and joining in the discussions.

Hi Rob, and welcome to the "English Mysteries Club". Ah that's a lovely area; my brother used to live there :) I expect you're familiar with the "Fethering" series by Simon Brett. Our current group read of The Black Tower by P.D. James is set just along the coast in Dorset as well.

It sounds like this group will be just your cup of tea, so do in wherever you like and have fun!

Phair (sphair) Recently joined and have been catching up on discussions. I’m a retired librarian (44.5 yrs at the same library). My reading tastes are varied but tend mostly toward mystery with an emphasis on historical mysteries. I’ll admit I have actually read fewer Golden Age authors than I should although I have happily watched many a tv or movie adaptation of their works.

message 493: by Helen (new)

Helen (helenfrominyocounty) | 10 comments Hi, Phair! I'm a historical mystery fan myself and read across a span of time periods. That's basically all I read, tho I'll throw in an occasional actual history book, just to liven things up 8-). Welcome to the group!

Robin Craig Clark (rudhek) Hello everyone, what a lovely place to meet and share our passions for English mysteries. I grew up in the Essex countryside and have walked many ancient pathways across England, Wales, and Scotland. I love stories where nature is part of the mystery, such as Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn.
